The Latin American Society of Hypertension (LASH) is a non-profit learned Society. It was founded in 1993 in Caracas, Venezuela, for a group of Latin American Scientists and physicians interested in the field of hypertension, and its primary aims are to promote, organise, coordinate and execute high-level scientific research in Latin America; as well as improve knowledge of hypertension and related diseases by organising educational programmes to physicians and health professionals. LASH endeavours to encompass all aspects of hypertension, including the basic, epidemiological and clinical areas.
Until now LASH has organised three successful scientific meetings on hypertension. All of them were held in Caracas, which is the permanent venue for the Latin American Congress on Hypertension. The Third Congress took place in November 2000 with the participation of more than 1000 physicians and health professionals from Latin America and abroad. The content of this supplement reflects some of the most important recent advances and research challenges in the field of hypertension, in which world and Latin American leaders in hypertension have been invited to participate and share their best experiences, and to discuss new approaches in epidemiology, pathophysiology, treatment and prognosis of hypertension. Some original papers have also been included that were presented during the celebration of the scientific meeting.
