Call for Patients and Families with Hirschsprung’s Disease

A major gene for Hirschsprung’s disease has been mapped on chromosome 10 [see Nature Genetics, August 1993].

We are interested in studying families with recurrence of this disorder (which as far as the chromosome 10 gene is concerned is transmitted as an autosomal dominant trait with incomplete penetrance) and also isolated cases (for the study of possible mutations using the candidate gene approach).

NIGMS Human Genetic Mutant Cell Repository

The National Institute of General Medical Sciences’ Human Genetic Mutant Cell Repository has cell cultures available in the following categories: human/rodent somatic cell hybrid mapping panels, inherited metabolic disorders, biochemically mutant cell cultures with characterized mutations, well-characterized chromosomally aberrant cell cultures, extended family pedigrees, and a human diversity and vanishing populations collection. The 1992/1993 catalog includes 5,270 cell cultures and 275 DNA samples. The 1992/1993 catalog supplement, which includes new cultures and a revised human/rodent ideogram section, is now available. Investigators are also encouraged to contact the Repository to submit specimens from individuals with well-documented genetic diseases or somatic cell hybrids retaining human chromosomes or derivative human chromosomes not currently in the collection. Mauro Baschirotto Award 1994

Since 1992, the European Society of Human Genetics has presented the Mauro Baschirotto Award during its annual meeting in recognition of individual achievements in human genetics. The award is funded through the philanthropy of the Mauro Baschirotto family.

Award

The laureate receives a golden ring reproducing the logo of the Mauro Baschirotto Foundation, specially designed by the silversmiths of Vicenza (Italy) and cast in a single copy each year, and a cheque of 1500 ECU to cover the expenses for the participation of the awardee to the 3-day meeting of the Society.

Eligibility

Candidates working in Europe can be nominated from any of the genetic disciplines.

The awardee must be present at the 26th annual meeting of the European Society of Human Genetics, International Conference Centre, Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie de la Villette, Paris, June 2–5, 1994.

Application Procedure and Deadline

Nomination letters describing the scientific accomplishments of the candidates in detail must be received by February 15, 1994.
