International System for Human Cytogenetic Nomenclature (ISCN)

The ISCN standing Committee intends to update and revise the nomenclature for constitutional chromosome aberrations, and combine the guidelines for constitutional (ISCN 1985) and acquired (ISCN 1991) chromosome abnormalities in one volume. The Committee would very much appreciate receiving information on ambiguities or inadequacies in the current ISCN nomenclature. Fourth Annual Meeting of the European Alliance of Genetic Support Groups

From Friday June 3 to Sunday June 5, 1994, the European Alliance of Genetic Support Groups (EAGS) will organize its Fourth Annual Meeting. The meeting takes place at the

International Conference Centre

Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie de la Villette

30, avenue Corentin-Cariou

F-75019 Paris (France)

parallel to the 26th Annual Meeting of the European Society of Human Genetics.

The EAGS was founded in 1991 as an umbrella organization of national and supernational patient support groups in Europe, helping people and families who suffer from genetic or congenital disorders. Memberhip is open to European federations of diagnosisbound patient support groups, as well as to national umbrella organizations, whenever they deal with genetic or congenital diseases.

Scientific and technical developments have farreaching consequences for both individuals and society as a whole. Scientists as well as practitioners, politicians and ethicists are involved. Fundamental principles are at stake, so the input of laymen’s experiences gets increasing importance.

Therefore, the programme of the meeting pays due attention to subjects like: should ‘freedom of choice’ be respected under all circumstances? patenting of the human genome; the function of support groups for patients and scientists; a general, basic approach of ethical questions related to genetics and congenital disorders.

Language: English

Registration: the meeting is open to (future) members. They should register before the end of April 1994 at the EAGS secretariat.
