Mental health in healthcare professionals

The COVID-19 pandemic put a major strain on the healthcare system worldwide, not least on the psychological and emotional wellbeing of doctors, nurses, and other medical staff. Even before the pandemic, healthcare professionals faced anxiety, depression, and burnout due to high-pressure working environments and long, irregular working hours. Despite the growing recognition of this problem, and of the importance of healthcare teams’ mental health on patient outcomes, barriers to identifying and addressing mental health issues in the healthcare workforce remain. Affected individuals may be reluctant to seek help due to perceived taboos, while support systems for those who do seek help may be limited. Understanding the factors affecting mental health among these individuals is critical for addressing these problems.
This Collection will highlight original research on the wellbeing of all healthcare professionals, including the causes, frequency, and consequences of mental health issues, as well as strategies for ameliorating them.
This Collection supports and amplifies research related to SDG 3.
