Materials science 'needs new international research centre'

28 June 1999

Research into materials is one of the most exciting and productive areas of science, delegates at the session on the science of new materials were told yesterday.

Richard Catlow from Britain's Royal Institution said that it was of huge relevance to the problems that the world will face in the next century.

But Catlow added that that it was often hard for researchers in developing countries to pay for or gain access to experimental facilities, and proposals were made during the meeting for a new institute similar to the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste.
