Science associations to share experiences

June 28 1999

Science associations to share experiences Two upcoming meetings will highlight ways of broadening interest and involvement in science. Possibilities for the exchange of information and international cooperation between associations for the advancement of science will be the subject of a special meeting tomorrow morning at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, starting at 9.00 a.m.

The meeting follows the proposal by Unesco director-general Federico Mayor at the opening session that all countries should have a non-government organisation for promoting and popularizing science, along the lines of those in the United States and Britain. To this end, the International Federation of Associations for the Advancement of Science, currently led by the Chinese body, is inviting members of existing organisations - and anyone else interested - to learn about their activities.

A separate meeting, to take place in the Karman Room of the Hyatt Regency Hotel this afternoon will focus on the topic of 'Gender mainstreaming'
