Transporters in the nervous system

Transporters in the nervous system are proteins that span the plasma membrane and are involved in movement of ions and molecules across the membrane. They include neurotransmitter transporters, which move neurotransmitters or their metabolites from the extracellular space into a neuron, and vesicular transporters, which are involved in filling synaptic vesicles.

Inhibition of VMAT2 by β2-adrenergic agonists, antagonists, and the atypical antipsychotic ziprasidone

Several existing β2-adrenergic agonists and antagonists, as well as the atypical antipsychotic ziprasidone, are identified as high affinity VMAT2 inhibitors, which could have implications for drug repurposing and drug derivatization campaigns.

Phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate (PIP₂) directly regulates norepinephrine transporter (NET) dimer stabilization at the plasma membrane. Furthermore, PIP₂ interaction with NET affects efflux.
