Stomata

Stomata are minute openings found in the epidermis of leaves, stems and other plant organs. Stomata allow gases such as carbon dioxide, water vapour and oxygen to diffuse into and out of the internal tissues of the plant.

Direct attenuation of Arabidopsis ERECTA signalling by a pair of U-box E3 ligases

PUB30/31 ensure the optimal signalling output of ERECTA for proper plant growth and stomatal development. A heterodimeric partner BAK1 is a kinase and a scaffold that activates PUB30/31, which in turn ubiquitinate ligand-activated ERECTA for degradation.

Towards a unified theory of plant photosynthesis and hydraulics

Using trait-based optimality theory that unifies stomatal responses and acclimation of plants to changing environments, this study builds a model of the coupling of CO₂ and water vapour exchanges through the leaves. This successfully predicts the simultaneous decline in carbon assimilation, stomatal conductance and photosynthetic capacity during progressive droughts.

Engineering a K⁺ channel ‘sensory antenna’ enhances stomatal kinetics, water use efficiency and photosynthesis

Stomatal guard cells regulate CO₂ entry to the leaf for photosynthesis but respond slowly to fluctuating light, thus reducing carbon assimilation and water use efficiencies. Substantial efficiency gains are realized by engineering the gating of a K⁺ channel native to the guard cells.

Conserved signalling components coordinate epidermal patterning and cuticle deposition in barley

The leaf epidermis is sealed by a lipid-rich cuticle to prevent water loss and interspersed with stomatal pores to allow gas exchange. Here the authors provide evidence that two barley proteins, HvYDA1 and HvBRX-Solo, regulate both processes linking epidermal patterning with cuticular properties in a cereal crop.

Spatially patterned hydrogen peroxide orchestrates stomatal development in Arabidopsis

Stomatal development is regulated by multiple intrinsic developmental and environmental signals. Here, the authors show that spatially patterned hydrogen peroxide activates the energy sensor SnRK1 to stabilize the SPCH transcription factor and optimize stomatal development in Arabidopsis.

Co-option of stomatal bHLH genes drives development of the seta in Marchantia

During evolution, the acquisition of special types of cells and tissues requires new regulatory genes that control cell division and cell differentiation. Here, we found that stomatal basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factors are co-opted for the development of seta in the liverwort Marchantia polymorpha, which lacks true stomata.

Exploiting a channel voltage ‘antenna’ for gains in water use efficiency and biomass

Guard cell outward rectifying potassium (GORK) channel activity is associated with channel clustering at the guard cell membrane. We show that clustering and gating both depend on an extended ‘antenna’ of bound channel voltage sensors. Uncoupling clustering and gating facilitates K⁺ flux, accelerating stomatal movements in environments typical for plants in the field.

SCREAM in the making of stomata

Receptor-mediated regulation of SPEECHLESS by a MAP kinase cascade coordinates cell fate specification during stomatal development. SCREAM functions as a scaffold to bring SPEECHLESS in proximity with MPK3/MPK6, thereby allowing its down-regulation to inhibit stomatal cell fate.
