Tiller Number1 encodes an ankyrin repeat protein that controls tillering in bread wheat

Tiller number is an important agronomic trait of wheat. Here, the authors clone a positive regulator of wheat tiller number and show that the encoded ankyrin repeat protein can promote tiller bud outgrowth through inhibiting ABA biosynthesis and signaling.

The F-box protein UFO controls flower development by redirecting the master transcription factor LEAFY to new cis-elements

LEAFY is a master transcription factor that regulates flower development through interaction with other proteins such as the F-box UFO. This study shows that UFO unexpectedly acts as a transcriptional cofactor that drives LEAFY to new genomic locations.

Evolution of meristem zonation by CLE gene duplication in land plants

CLE peptides control stem-cell activity in meristems. Recent studies in Marchantia and Arabidopsis support the idea that an ancestral function of CLE peptides was to promote stem cells. After gene duplication in angiosperms, a subset of CLE peptides became stem-cell suppressors.

A 3D gene expression atlas of the floral meristem based on spatial reconstruction of single nucleus RNA sequencing data

Single-cell transcriptomics allows gene expression heterogeneity to be assessed at cellular resolution but the original location of each cell is unknown. Here the authors combine single nuclei RNA-seq with 3D spatial reconstruction of floral meristems to link gene activities with morphology.

Glutaredoxins regulate maize inflorescence meristem development via redox control of TGA transcriptional activity

Glutaredoxins are small redox proteins that use glutathione as a cofactor. In maize, a glutaredoxin named MSCA1 controls the activity of transcription factor FASCIATED EAR4 through dimerization, regulating inflorescence meristem development.

Discovery of a bread wheat mutant with extra spikelets and a gain in grain yield

Grain yield in bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is largely determined by spike architecture. Mutations in DUO-B1, encoding an AP2/ERF protein, result in a spike architecture with extra spikelets that increases both grain number per spike and yield under field conditions. Genetically modifying DUO-B1 has the potential to increase cereal production.

Learning from CIK plants

The stem cell niche in plant shoots is maintained by carefully orchestrated feedback between a series of CLAVATA (CLV) receptors and their ligand CLV3, and the transcription factor WUSCHEL. A new clade of co-receptors, CLV3-insensitive receptor kinases (CIKs), provides an important missing link in CLV signalling.
