Polaritons

Definition

Polaritons are hybrid particles made up of a photon strongly coupled to an electric dipole. Examples of such a dipole include an electron–hole pair in a semiconductor, which forms an exciton polariton, and the oscillating electrons at the surface of a metal, which creates a surface-plasmon polariton.

    Here, the authors demonstrate that the dispersion of hyperbolic phonon polaritons can be controlled using the permittivity changes inherent in the different phases of phase change materials. This enables direct launching, reflection, transmission and refraction at the phase change material domain boundaries.

    Driven-dissipative microcavity polariton experiments find superfluid-like behaviour but the intuition developed from equilibrium systems cannot be straightforwardly applied. Juggins et al. show coherently-driven polaritons are not superfluid and earlier observations instead arise from a distinct rigid state.

    Atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides are an ideal platform to investigate the underlying physics of strongly bound excitons in low dimensions. Here, the authors demonstrate the formation of a bosonic condensate driven by excitons in two-dimensional MoSe2 strongly coupled to light in a solid-state resonator.
