Evidence that endosperm turgor pressure both promotes and restricts seed growth and size

Using computational simulations and experiments, the authors propose a mechanical model of seed growth where endosperm pressure directly induces growth but indirectly inhibits it through force-dependent testa wall stiffening.

Direct attenuation of Arabidopsis ERECTA signalling by a pair of U-box E3 ligases

PUB30/31 ensure the optimal signalling output of ERECTA for proper plant growth and stomatal development. A heterodimeric partner BAK1 is a kinase and a scaffold that activates PUB30/31, which in turn ubiquitinate ligand-activated ERECTA for degradation.

Genomic basis of the giga-chromosomes and giga-genome of tree peony Paeonia ostii

Tree peony (Paeonia ostii) has the largest chromosome of any sequenced plants to date. Here, the authors assemble its genome and reveal the association of a list of candidate genes with fatty acid biosynthesis and the possible contribution of transposon and histone expansion to maintain the giga-chromosomes.

Shank-localized cell wall growth contributes to Arabidopsis root hair elongation

For a long time, root hairs were believed to expand via tip growth only. This study shows that the root hair shank undergoes considerable expansion too, which coincides with the deposition of new cell wall material in the shank.

Discovery of a bread wheat mutant with extra spikelets and a gain in grain yield

Grain yield in bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is largely determined by spike architecture. Mutations in DUO-B1, encoding an AP2/ERF protein, result in a spike architecture with extra spikelets that increases both grain number per spike and yield under field conditions. Genetically modifying DUO-B1 has the potential to increase cereal production.
