Phase contrast microscopy is a white-light optical microscopy technique that relies on sample-induced phase changes in illumination light to generate images with more information than provided by sample-induced intensity changes. Phase information is mixed with intensity information in conventional phase-contrast microscopy, whereas quantitative phase-contrast microscopy displays only the phase information.

3D magnetic imaging using electron vortex beam microscopy

Theoretical understanding of the interaction between electron vortex beams (EVBs) and magnetic samples is important for practical application in 3D magnetic imaging. The authors calculated the EVB magnetic phase shift upon transmission and developed a corresponding phase-reconstruction method, enabling potential robust implementations of EVB-based phase microscopy in magnetic as well as chiral materials.

Stain-free identification of cell nuclei using tomographic phase microscopy in flow cytometry

The accurate identification of the three-dimensional quantitative shape of a cell nucleus is now possible without fluorescent staining by applying computational segmentation to refractive index tomograms recorded in the flow cytometry mode.

GANscan: continuous scanning microscopy using deep learning deblurring

In order to speed up the microscopy acquisition process, we developed a method, termed GANscan, in which videos are recorded as the stage is moving at high speeds. Using generative adversarial networks (GANs), we achieve 30x the throughput of stop-and-stare systems.

Ultrafast and hypersensitive phase imaging of propagating internodal current flows in myelinated axons and electromagnetic pulses in dielectrics

The authors introduce differentially enhanced compressed ultrafast photography, a phase imaging platform that combines high speed and sensitivity. They visualise propagation of passive current flows along myelinated axons, and electromagnetic pulses in lithium niobate.
