Strong second-harmonic generation by sublattice polarization in non-uniformly strained monolayer graphene

Nanostructured platforms for efficient nonlinear optics are the building block of next generation integrated photonic devices. Here the authors provide a straightforward method to engineer the lattice symmetry of monolayer graphene, boosting the SHG signal at low temperature.

Ambipolar charge-transfer graphene plasmonic cavities

A 2D material-based liquid crystal for deep-ultraviolet light modulation

Suspensions of 2D hexagonal boron nitride show an anomalously large specific Cotton–Mouton coefficient, enabling the fabrication of a magnetically tuneable and stable birefringent optical device. This device serves as a transmissive light modulator with wavelengths entering the ultraviolet (UV)-C region, representing a technological advance in deep-UV modulation.

A laser-based chemical process enables reversible doping of graphene

Laser-assisted chemical reactions have been used to write reversible ultra-high-density doping patterns in graphene for optoelectronic applications. The approach used two laser beams with specific photon energies and geometric configurations to enable local doping with a high dopant coverage ratio on graphene, while preserving the electronic properties of the surface.
