These tissues are closely associated with the external environment and the mucosal immune system must provide protective immunity to pathogens but remain tolerant of non-harmful environmental substances.

HIV vaccine candidate plus microbicide decreases SIV infection risk by more than 90%

Breakthroughs in developing an effective human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) vaccine have been rare despite decades of effort. By combining vaccination with a topical microbicide that also potentiates vaccine-induced immunity, 16 out of 20 female macaques were protected against vaginal acquisition of the highly pathogenic simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV).

A dietary cholesterol by-product regulates intestinal IgA secretion via GPR183

The cholesterol metabolite receptor GPR183 regulates the secretion of IgA by intestinal plasma cells. This process requires epithelial cell sensing of commensal bacteria and the uptake of dietary cholesterol to generate the GPR183 ligand 7α,25-hydroxycholesterol. Upon GPR183 activation, IgA⁺ plasma cells remain at the center of intestinal villi and reduce their antibody secretion.
