Direct access to chiral aliphatic amines by catalytic enantioconvergent redox-neutral amination of alcohols

Preparing enantioenriched aliphatic amines from readily available feedstocks is challenging to achieve. Now, direct enantioconvergent amination of racemic secondary alcohols using a variety of aliphatic primary amines is reported, catalysed by chiral iridium and phosphoric acid species. This atom-economical strategy streamlines the enantioselective synthesis of N-containing commercial drugs and analogues.

Catalytic enantioselective synthesis of boron-stereogenic BODIPYs

BODIPYs possessing boron-stereogenic centres are rare and it is challenging to develop catalytic methodologies to enantioselectively prepare these molecules. Now, a palladium-catalysed desymmetric intramolecular C–H arylation reaction for the enantioselective synthesis of boron-stereogenic BODIPYs is reported, which gives access to various six- to nine-membered chiral boron heterocycles with good enantioselectivity.

Control of stereogenic oxygen in a helically chiral oxonium ion

The design, synthesis and characterization of a helically chiral triaryloxonium ion is reported, which is an example of a chiral non-racemic and configurationally stable molecule in which the oxygen atom is the sole stereogenic centre.

Stereoselective C–O silylation and stannylation of alkenyl acetates

Carbon-heteroatom bond formation reactions are of high interest in synthetic organic chemistry. Here, the authors report the cobalt-catalyzed synthesis of tri- and tetrasubstituted alkenyl silanes and stannanes via C–O functionalization of vinyl acetates using silylzinc pivalate and stannylzinc chloride as the nucleophiles.

Serial rotation electron diffraction for rapid phase analysis to accelerate materials development

Serial rotation electron diffraction (SerialRED) enables rapid and reliable phase analysis and structure determination of complex polycrystalline materials that cannot be routinely characterized using X-ray diffraction. Five zeolite phases were identified in a single synthesis product by automated screening of hundreds of crystals, demonstrating the power of SerialRED for materials development.
