Marine mammals

Marine mammals are those whose life cycle is at least in part dependent on the ocean. They include cetaceans, such as whales and dolphins, sirenians, such as dugongs and manatees, pinnipeds, such as seals and walruses, and also partially marine species such as polar bears and sea otters.

Zinc isotopes from archaeological bones provide reliable trophic level information for marine mammals

McCormack et al. present the first comparison of archaeological δ66Zn from bone material compared with traditional δ15 N and δ13 C values derived from collagen samples over a large geographic area. This study shows that the inclusion of δ66Zn analysis can provide otherwise inaccessible supplementary dietary information and more robust trophic level estimations.

Climate shifts for krill predators

Antarctic krill play a key role in Southern Ocean food webs but are vulnerable to climate change, with habitat shifts predicted in response. Now, a study of climate change impacts on a krill-specialist predator — the crabeater seal — suggests that this abundant marine mammal may be forced southwards with its prey.
