Climate-change mitigation encompasses policies and activities intended to reduce the greenhouse gas forcing of the climate system. Key intervention points include: the reduction of greenhouse gas sources, for example by reducing deforestation; emissions, for instance low carbon energy generation; and enhancing greenhouse gas sinks, for example by changes in land use.

Classifying different national approaches to climate governance

Statistical analysis of a climate institutions dataset has identified four national models of climate governance used across countries with high emissions. These models are associated with the climate policy ambition and performance of each country. This analysis reveals that the effectiveness of climate policymaking could be strengthened by building climate institutions.

Only halving emissions by 2030 can minimize risks of crossing cryosphere thresholds

Considering cryosphere and warming uncertainties together implies drastically increased risk of threshold crossing in the cryosphere, even under lower-emission pathways, and underscores the need to halve emissions by 2030 in line with the 1.5 °C limit of the Paris Agreement.
