Breast cancer is caused by the development of malignant cells in the breast. The malignant cells originate in the lining of the milk glands or ducts of the breast (ductal epithelium). Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, but it can also appear in men.

International research to address the challenges of metastatic breast cancer: the AURORA Program (BIG 14-01)

Despite recent advances in breast cancer research, we still know little about the mechanisms that lead to metastatic breast cancer (MBC). However, treatment options for patients have increased based on results of recent randomized clinical trials in this setting. Today we have much hope, yet many questions remain unanswered. Conducting a fully academic and international study such as AURORA is very challenging, yet ever more crucial to advancing knowledge about MBC.

An antisense RNA promotes breast cancer metastasis via upregulation of NQO1

An antisense RNA, NQO1-AS, binds and stabilizes its sense strand, upregulating the redox enzyme NQO1 in metastatic breast cancer cells. Overexpression of NQO1 facilitates lung colonization by suppressing oxidative stress and ferroptosis, and cancer cells dependent on this pathway can be targeted by a combined therapy that induces ferroptosis while simultaneously inhibiting NQO1.
