Applications of AFM

Here the authors describe a method for remote magnetothermal stimulation of neurons that achieves subsecond behavioural responses in Drosophila fruit flies by combining magnetic nanoparticles with TRPA1-A, a rate-sensitive thermoreceptor. Tuning the properties of magnetic nanoparticles to respond to different magnetic field strengths and frequencies enables multichannel thermal magnetogenetic stimulation.

Cell surface attachment factors, such as glycans, play an important role in viral infection. Here, Petitjean et al. show that SARS-CoV-2 specifically binds to 9-Oacetylated sialic acid and have designed novel inhibitors based on multivalent derivatives.

Guillaume-Gentil et al. describe a method that employs a modified AFM tip for selectively sampling from and injecting into individual fungal cells of differing morphology. The authors describe extensive modifications on their system previously used for mammalian cells to overcome many of the challenges associated with working on single fungal cells.

This review focuses on the most recent advancements of hydrogel-based therapies with therapeutic drugs or stem cells on their applications to the treatment of CNS disorders, including brain injury, spinal cord injury, neurodegenerative diseases, and brain tumors.
