Achalasia most frequently refers to oesophageal achalasia, a motility disorder characterized by failure of the lower oesophageal sphincter to relax. Functional obstruction of the oesophagus leads to its contortion and dilation. Symptoms include dysphagia, regurgitation, chest pain and weight loss.
