About the Guest Editor

 

Guest Editor Il-Kwon OhIl-Kwon Oh is a leading materials science researcher and the Director of the Active materials and dynamic systems Laboratory at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), South Korea. He obtained his PhD from KAIST in 2001 at the department of Mechanical Engineering, where he now holds the position of Full Professor. His research interests include soft actuators and artificial muscles, smart materials and structures, energy harvesting and energy conversion materials, as well as functional cellular structures. Il-Kwon Oh has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2016.

Guest Editor Francesca CignaFrancesca Cigna is a senior researcher in Earth observation at the Institute of Atmospheric Sciences and Climate (ISAC) of the National Research Council (CNR), Italy. She holds a BSc and an MSc in environment and territory engineering, and a PhD in Earth sciences. Her key areas of interest include satellite radar remote sensing, SAR interferometry (InSAR), image processing and time series analysis, geology and geomorphology, geophysics, natural and man-made hazards and risks, ground instability and land changes, landscape archaeology and cultural heritage. She has been serving as Editorial Board Member of Scientific Reports – Earth and Environmental Sciences section – since 2016.

The purpose of this Collection is to present original methodologies to improve the status quo and to report meta-research about the reproducibility of published animal research.

Guest Editor Florian FrommletFlorian Frommlet is an Associate Professor at the Institute of Medical Statistics at the Medical University of Vienna, Austria. His research interests include both theoretical and applied statistics with applications in the life sciences. He has worked extensively on the problems of high dimensional data analysis which occur in modern genetics. Since 2014 he has been a member of the animal ethics committee of his university which motivates his strong interest in questions of reproducibility in animal trials. Florian Frommlet has been serving as Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2014.

About the Guest Editor

 

Ricardo Bertolla is a specialist in male infertility research. He is Professor of Urology at the Paulista School of Medicine of the Federal University of São Paulo, Brazil, where he is also Graduate Program Coordinator of the Graduate Program in Urology. In 2018 he joined the Editorial Board of Scientific Reports. His research group is interested in the cellular and molecular mechanisms of male infertility, with a specific emphasis on sperm functional alterations (including sperm DNA fragmentation and mitochondrial activity) as well as on semen proteomics.

Advances in our understanding of tumor progression and relapse have underlined the importance of tumor microenvironment, which comprises components within the immediate vicinity of tumor cells such as fibroblasts, immune cells and the extracellular matrix. The exact way in which tumor microenvironment affects metastatic spread and acquired resistance to therapy is not fully understood, but accumulating evidence suggests epigenetic mechanisms are involved. This Collection invites original research focusing on epigenetic changes in tumor cells and their surrounding microenvironment.

Aamir Ahmad holds a PhD in Biochemistry from AMU, India, and completed his post-doctoral training at the NCI, NIH, MD, USA. He is currently a Scientist at University of Alabama at Birmingham, USA. Dr Ahmad’s research investigates the epigenetic basis of cancer drug resistance and metastasis, with a focus on non-coding RNAs, cancer stem cells and the tumor microenvironment. He has been serving on the Cancer section of Scientific Reports’ Editorial Board since 2017.

Guest Editor Yeon-Kyun ShinYeon-Kyun Shin is a Roy J. Carver Professor of Biophysics at Iowa State University, USA. His lab uses spin labelling electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and single molecule techniques to investigate the structure and the dynamics of SNARE complexes, to uncover fusion intermediates, and to observe the real-time dynamics of the fusion pore. Highlights are the discoveries of a SNARE four-helix bundle with EPR in 1998 and the hemifusion intermediate in intracellular membrane fusion in 2005. He has been serving as Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2016.

Ciria C Hernandez is an Assistant Research Scientist at the University of Michigan Life Sciences Institute in Ann Arbor, USA. Her research focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms that govern the regulation of ion channels and cell surface receptors, as well as developing new strategies to treat associated diseases. Michael Ernst-Heinrich Fassbender is a leading scientist in the fields of radionuclide production and purification with more than 20 years of experience. He received his PhD degree (Dr. rer. nat.) in chemistry and radiochemistry from the University of Cologne, Germany. After a two-year postdoc fellowship at iThembaLABS, South Africa, he joined the Los Alamos National Laboratory, USA, to take on technical, scientific and scholarly responsibilities within the US Department of Energy’s National Isotope Program. Guest Editor Xuyang Lu Xuyang Lu is an Associate Professor at the Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China. His academic research focuses on the biogeochemical cycles of mountain ecosystems and their responses to climate change and human activities.  Recently his work has investigated the effect of litter and organic matter on soil C and N transformations and their microbial mechanisms. He is also involved in projects aimed at assessing the impact of policies such as grazing exclusion on Tibetan Plateau ecosystems. Prof Lu has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2017.

Guest Editor Ruth BlascoRuth Blasco is a researcher at the Catalan Institute of Human Paleoecology and Social Evolution (IPHES-CERCA), Rovira i Virgili University, Spain. Her research, using taphonomy and zooarchaeology, focuses on the evolution of human behaviour throughout the Middle and early Late Pleistocene. She is also involved in various experimental studies on hominid-carnivore interactions and works at several archaeological sites in Europe and the Levant. Her research has been covered by several news blogs, including Nature News, the Discovery Channel and BBC News. In 2015, Ruth Blasco joined the Editorial Board of Scientific Reports.

The potential of machine learning can only be fully exploited if more efficient hardware is developed that meets the special needs of bio-inspired computing schemes. In this respect, non-volatile memory technology using memristive devices in combination with neuromorphic systems is a promising way to such hardware. The aim of this Collection is to provide a platform for interdisciplinary research on unconventional computing with new physical substrates. Guest Editor Xiaochun LiXiaochun Li is the Raytheon Endowed Chair in Manufacturing Engineering at the Departments of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering & Materials Science and Engineering at UCLA, USA. He received his PhD from Stanford University in 2001 and was awarded many distinctions for his research, including the National Science Foundation CAREER award in 2002. His research interests are in the interdisciplinary areas of innovative manufacturing and materials processing, applied physics and nanoscience. In 2018 he joined the Editorial Board of Scientific Reports. Prof Li has been elected as a Fellow of ASME and the International Society for Nanomanufacturing.

Guest Editor Michaela LucasClinical Professor Michaela Lucas is a research group leader at the Harry Perkins Institute, University of Western Australia, and a Consultant Clinical Immunologist at Sir Charles Gairdner and Perth Children's Hospitals where she leads the drug allergy services. She is currently the President Elect of the Australasian Society of Immunology and Clinical Immunology (ASCIA), Chair of the ASCIA Drug Allergy Committee, and is playing a key role in developing Australian guidelines on drug allergy management. Prof Lucas has a strong research background in T-cell immunology and more recently focuses on drug allergy and transplantation. In 2017 she joined the Editorial Board of Scientific Reports.

His research group investigates the fundamental and applied aspects of ultra-short laser-matter interaction with a special focus on attosecond physics, ultrafast metrology, plasma photonics and laser particle acceleration. After obtaining his PhD from Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai, Dr Kahaly held positions at Laboratoire d'Optique Appliquée (LOA) of Université Paris-Saclay, and at Commissariat à l'Énergie Atomique (CEA), Saclay, France. Guest Editor Ingo EitelIngo Eitel obtained the board certification in internal medicine, cardiology, intensive care medicine and cardiac magnetic magnetic resonance. He currently holds the positions of Professor of Cardiology and co-Director of the University Heart Center Lübeck, Germany. Prof Eitel’s research areas include interventional cardiology, acute coronary syndrome, reperfusion injury, cardioprotection, cardiogenic shock, CMR and Takotsubo cardiomyopathy. Prof Eitel has acted as faculty in national and international meetings and has won several research awards including the Andreas Grüntzig award for interventional cardiology of the German Society of Cardiology, where he currently chairs the working group on cardiac magnetic resonance imaging. He is also a member of several working groups of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC). In 2018 he joined the Editorial Board of Scientific Reports.

Guest Editor Harald LangerHarald Langer studied medicine at the Otto von Guericke University of Magdeburg and TU Munich, Germany. After training in general and interventional cardiology and conducting postdoctoral research in the Experimental Immunology Branch at the NIH, Bethesda, USA, he was appointed in 2018 as Director of the Department for Cardiology, Angiology and Intensive Care Medicine and Professor of Cardiology at the University Heart Center Lübeck, Germany. In 2018 he also joined the Editorial Board of Scientific Reports. Prof Langer is a principal investigator for the German Centre for Cardiovascular Research (Hamburg/Kiel/Lübeck), and his main research areas include interventional cardiology and structural heart diseases with a particular interest in diseases of the mitral valve. Guest Editor Anna KaksonenWith a Doctor of Technology in Environmental Biotechnology, an MSc (Engineering) in Environmental Technology and an MSc in Environmental Science and Policy, Anna Kaksonen develops tools and biotechnical solutions for sustainable industrial processes, resource recovery from waste streams, pollution prevention, remediation of contaminated environments, and mitigation of microbially caused problems. 10 years ago, Dr Kaksonen joined the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Australia, where she currently leads the Biotechnology and Synthetic Biology Group. Delia Cabrera DeBuc is a Research Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, University of Miami, USA. She is a biophysicist that specializes in medical image processing and imaging biomarker development with an emphasis in ophthalmology, vision science, and neuroscience. Her research group currently investigates novel ocular imaging biomarkers in neurodegenerative diseases of the central nervous system such as multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. She has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2016.

Sho Morioka is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Virginia, USA. His research areas include regulation of programmed cell death (e.g. necroptosis, pyroptosis and apoptosis) and phagocytosis of dying cells. His current work focuses on the elucidation of the molecular mechanisms that enable phagocytes to efficiently remove apoptotic cells. Dr Morioka is also exploring the effect of modifying cell removal in vivo using uniquely created animal models. He has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2017.

In addition, self-assembled amyloid peptides gain growing interest in material science, bioengineering, and synthetic chemistry as they can serve as a simple, low cost, green and tuneable catalysts of chemical reactions or scaffolds and building blocks for nano/biomaterials. This Collection aims to focus on the beneficial sides of amyloid formation, primarily exploring functional amyloids used for unconventional synthetic purposes.

Marianna Török is an Associate Professor of Chemistry at the University of Massachusetts Boston, USA. She received broad training in chemistry, biochemistry and biophysics from the University of Szeged, Hungary, from the University of Southern California Los Angeles, and the MIT, USA. She has been involved in amyloid research since 2000 when, as a postdoctoral fellow in Ralf Langen’s group, she investigated the structural features of Aβ fibrils and contributed to the introduction of the SDSL-EPR for structural studies of amyloidogenic polypeptides. Her current interests include understanding the chemical factors that govern protein misfolding and aggregation leading to amyloid formation, and how these results can be translated into chemical and biomedical applications. Marianna Török has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2016.

 

 

Adult neurogenesis and aging mechanisms

Giuseppe Lupo was trained as a graduate student and post-doc in the labs of Giuseppina Barsacchi (University of Pisa) and William Harris (University of Cambridge), where he worked on neural development in frog and fish embryos and in human embryonic stem cells. He moved to Sapienza University of Rome in 2009, where he presently serves as an Associate Professor of developmental biology. His current research is focused on the molecular mechanisms regulating mammalian neurogenesis using in vitro culture systems. Antonio Ambrosio is a Senior Scientist at the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) and Principal Investigator of the research line “Vectorial Nano-imaging” at the CNST-IIT in Milano, Italy. In 2012, he discovered the formation of spiral-shaped relief patterns on the surface of an azo-polymer, illuminated with a holographically-produced vortex laser beam; adding new degrees of freedom in structuring azo-polymers with light. In April 2013, he became Visiting Research Scholar of the John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Harvard University where in 2016 he became Principal Scientist at the Center for Nanoscale Systems. His research interests include the development of metasurface-based optical nano-devices and new optical near-field imaging and spectroscopy techniques for 2D materials, polymers and nanostructured surfaces. Antonio Ambrosio has been an Editorial Board member of Scientific Reports since 2014.

Cheng-Wen Lin is a Professor at the Department of Medical Laboratory Science and Biotechnology of China Medical University, Taiwan. He received his PhD from National Tsing-Hua University, Taiwan, and is an expert in molecular virology. His research focuses on the pathogenesis and antivirals of (re)emerging viruses, particular flaviviruses and coronaviruses. Cheng-Wen Lin has been an Editorial Board member of Scientific Reports since 2019.

 

Mehdi Mirsaeidi is an Associate Professor of pulmonary and critical care, and public health at the University of Miami, USA. After receiving his MPH at the University of Tehran, Iran, and subsequent clinical training, he began an infectious diseases fellowship at the University of Louisville in Kentucky, USA, followed by an internal medicine residency at the George Washington University Providence Hospital in DC, before his current appointment at the University of Miami, where he is also Director of the Sarcoidosis Program. His lab is interested in studying novel biomarkers that are involved in the context of pulmonary inflammatory diseases. Dr Mirsaeidi joined the Editorial Board of Scientific Reports in 2020.

Nunzio D'Agostino is an Assistant Professor of Bioinformatics and Genomics at Department of Agricultural Science, University of Naples Federico II, Italy. His main research interest is bioinformatics applied to genetic improvement of plant species. In particular, his research activity is focused on the analysis of NGS data and on the development of strategies, methods and tools for the management of "omics" data. In 2019 he joined the Editorial Board of Scientific Reports.

 

Dr Wenli Li is a research geneticist at the US Dairy Forage Research Center, the Agricultural Research Service, within the United States Department of Agriculture. Her research focuses on the nutritional and physiological transcriptomics using ruminant and mouse models. Her research interests include the investigation of microbial, digestive, and animal factors to increase dairy cow performance and nutrient use efficiency. Dr Li has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2019.

 

Dapeng Wang is a Senior Bioinformatician in Integrative Analysis at the Wellcome Centre for Human Genetics, University of Oxford. He holds a PhD degree in bioinformatics from the Beijing Institute of Genomics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. His research interests include the evolutionary mechanisms of eukaryotic genome structures, as well as the development and application of methodology and analytical tools of data from various omics technologies in a broad range of complex biological systems. Andrew Craig is a tenured Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical and Molecular Sciences at Queen’s University (Kingston, Ontario, Canada). He is also a member of the Cancer Biology & Genetics division of the Queen’s Cancer Research Institute. Areas of research expertise includes cancer motility, invasion, metastasis, metastasis suppressor microRNAs, and cancer immunotherapies. Prof Craig has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2019.

 

Marc S. Ernstoff trained as a medical oncologist and tumour immunologist before starting to focus more on laboratory, translational and clinical research aimed at expanding our understanding of the immunobiology of human cancer and the development of new immune therapies. His research continues to contribute to the development of novel therapies of renal cell cancer and melanoma including cytokine therapies, dendritic cell vaccines, immune checkpoint inhibition, targeted therapies and ex vivo expanded effector cells for adoptive transfer. Prof Ernstoff has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2019.

 

Hermann Frieboes, Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering, is Associate Professor in the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Louisville. He is a member of the Brown Cancer Center and the Center for Predictive Medicine, and the Director of the Interdisciplinary Oncology Laboratory. His research focuses on the study of disease progression and treatment response from engineering and physical sciences perspectives, including mathematical modelling, machine and statistical learning, and computational simulation techniques that are integrated with experimental and clinical data. Key areas of interest include immunotherapy and nanotherapy to treat cancer and infectious diseases. Prof Frieboes has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2019.

 

Paula Videira is an Assistant Professor at FCT NOVA. She is the principal Investigator leading the Glycoimmunology research group since 2008, co-founder and co-director of the patient-centric CDG&Allies-PPAIN for Congenital Disorders of Glycosylation since 2016, and CSO, co-founder of CellmAbs, glycan-based biopharmaceutical, since 2019. She is an expert in glycobiology and its interface with immunology and oncology. She is motivated by the mechanisms that govern glycan expression and recognition and its impact on human biology and disease, performing relevant translational research for innovative theragnostic methods. Leonidas Bleris is an Associate Professor and Cecil H. and Ida Green Professor in Systems Biology Science, with the Bioengineering Department of the University of Texas at Dallas. His research has focused on systems biology, mammalian synthetic biology and genome editing, and has been supported from NIH and NSF including the NSF CAREER award. Prof Bleris has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2015.

 

Maura McGrail is an Associate Professor in the Department of Genetics, Development and Cell Biology at Iowa State University. Her research interests are zebrafish developmental genetics, disease models, gene editing and genome engineering tools for functional genomics. Twistronics is a rapidly developing field in the area of two-dimensional materials. By simply adjusting the angle – or twist – between layers of two-dimensional materials, one can control the electrical properties of the complete system to produce incredible effects such as switching between non-conducting and superconducting states. This Collection will gather research articles that focus on the emerging field of Twistronics, spanning from the investigation of new materials/methods to novel applications, as well as related insights into van der Waals heterostructures, that further our understanding.

Ting Liao is an Associate Professor at the School of Mechanical Medical & Process Engineering from Queensland University of Technology, Australia. As a computational chemistry academic, Prof Liao is interested in the unique properties of low dimensional materials which cannot be obtained from the corresponding bulk forms. She has been focusing on computational design of low dimensional materials in diverse energy application, including catalysis and energy storage. She has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2015.

 

Taylor Sparks is an Associate Professor and Associate Chair of the Materials Science and Engineering Department at the University of Utah, USA. His current research centers on using materials informatics for the discovery, synthesis, characterization, and properties of new materials for energy applications. About the Guest Editors

 

Qing Ai is an Associate Professor of Beijing Normal University. He received his Ph.D in Physics from Tsinghua University in 2009. Prof Ai pursued research as a post-doctoral research associate in the Institute of Theoretical Physics in the Chinese Academy of Sciences and National Taiwan University. Currently, his work is focused on the recently discovered quantum coherence signature in the natural light-harvesting process, and quantum simulation of open quantum dynamics. Prof Ai has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2016.

 

Ahmed Farouk is currently an Assistant Professor, before which he was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Wilfrid Laurier University and Ryerson University, Canada. Prof Farouk is exceptionally well known for his seminal contributions to theories of quantum information, communication, and cryptography. Carlotta De Filippo is a Senior Researcher at the National Research Council, Institute of Agricultural Biology and Biotechnology (Italy). Dr De Filippo is applying metagenomics and metabolomics to the analysis of community structure, gene content, and function of complex microbial communities in human populations and in animal models (gut microbiome) exposed to different diets. In 2010 she published a seminal work on microbiota variability in African and Italian rural populations. Since then she continued to study how regional diversity in the diet is associated with differences in the microbiome, and how these differences are endangered by the globalization of food. Dr De Filippo is a member of European Consortium of JPI HDHL-INTIMIC “Knowledge Platform on Food, Diet, Intestinal Microbiomics and Human Health”. She has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2016.

 

Giulio Maria Pasinetti is the The Saunders Family Chair and Professor of Neurology, Neuroscience, and Geriatrics and Adult Development at the Ichan School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS) in NY. He also serves as the Director of  Basic and Biomedical Research in the Center for Geriatic Research and Training at the Bronx Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Prof Pasinetti is also the Director of the Center for Molecular Integrative Neuroresilience at the ISMMS. The Center’s goal is to understand the mechanisms of action through which novel therapeutics act against stressful events and to clarify the role of innate immunity in the gut/microbiome-brain axis at the genomic level in the promotion of cognitive and psychological resilience across the lifespan. He has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2019.

 

Silvia Turroni is Senior Assistant Professor in Chemistry and Biotechnology of Fermentation, Dept. Pharmacy and Biotechnology, University of Bologna, Italy. Andrew Clayton is a biophysicist who develops advanced microscopy techniques in order to quantify macromolecular interactions and dynamics in living cells. Educated at the University of Melbourne (B.Sc (hons, H1), PhD), Prof. Clayton has held appointments at the University of Melbourne, Max-Planck Institute and Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research. He is currently Professor of Bio-photonics at Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne. He has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2014.

 

Florian Rehfeldt holds a PhD in Physics from TU Munich, Germany and subsequently moved to University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, USA. Following this postdoctoral stay, he went as a group leader to University of Göttingen, Germany and since 2019 he is a tenured senior scientist at the University of Bayreuth, Germany. His research interests in biophysics include in particular the mechanical interactions of cells and the extracellular matrix. One focus is on structure and dynamics of the cytoskeleton and the nucleus to elucidate how mechanical cues from the outside are integrated into biochemical signaling and eventually affect cell fate. He has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2014.

 

Torsten Wittmann is a professor in the Department of Cell and Tissue Biology at the University of California, San Francisco. Research in the Wittmann lab focusses on how the microtubule cytoskeleton organizes intracellular structure and controls complex cell dynamics such as migration, polarity, and division that are critical to normal and pathological cell biology. Prof. Wittmann received his PhD from the University of Heidelberg / European Molecular Biology Laboratory in 1999 and since then has worked on many aspects of intracellular dynamics utilizing advanced live cell microscopy and optogenetics approaches. He has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2013.

 

 

Protein misfolding

A protein’s function depends on a precise quaternary structure. However, when that structure is disrupted through misfolding, not only does the protein lose its function, but it runs the risk of aggregating. Protein aggregation cascades are integral in the pathophysiology of proteinopathies such as prion disease and Alzheimer's disease, where they ultimately lead to atrophy and death. This Collection invites submissions which advance our understanding of the mechanisms of protein misfolding and clearance, and interventions directed at reducing protein aggregates.

Arianna Bellucci is Associate Professor of Pharmacology at University of Brescia, Italy. Her research focuses on the study of alpha-synuclein misfolding and aggregation in neurodegenerative disorders. In particular, Prof Bellucci is strongly interested in disclosing how the formation of pathological alpha-synuclein aggregates impacts on synaptic homeostasis and in identifying novel therapeutic targets for Parkinson’s disease and Multiple system Atrophy. She has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2019.

 

YoungSoo Kim is a Professor of Pharmacy at Yonsei University, South Korea. Prof Kim is a chemical biologist focused on misfolding protein engineering, amyloid-disaggregating drug discovery, plasma test development, and novel drug target investigation. Kwang Hun Lim is a Professor of Chemistry at East Carolina University, USA. Plant disease resistance

As our population continues to grow it is essential that we can ensure a high crop yield, and a large part of overcoming this challenge will be finding ways to protect crops from pathogenic threats. Plants have had to develop a number of ways to protect themselves without being able to move out of harm’s way, and therefore have a fairly sophisticated immune response. Despite this, the genetic homogeneity of our crops, along with an increased spread of foreign pathogens due to globalisation, renders them vulnerable to epidemics. This Collection invites original research on the plant immune response, and the associated tools and methods – from genome editing to crop breeding – with which we may shape it.

M. Hossein Borhan is a research scientist at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. Dr Borhan's research interest is to understand the molecular basis of plant immunity and pathogen virulence. He is particularly interested in the fungal disease of Brassica crops. Dr Borhan has close to 20 years of experience in the field of molecular plant pathology working on both the applied and basic research. He has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2019.

 

Giorgio Gambino is a Senior Researcher at the Institute for Sustainable Plant Protection of the National Research Council of Italy (IPSP-CNR). He holds a PhD degree in Agricultural, Forestry and Agroalimentary Sciences from the University of Turin, Italy. His main research interest is the study of the molecular basis underlying plant, biotic and abiotic stresses interactions. Induced seismicity

As industrial projects have expanded, and new technologies become available, we have seen a sharp rise in both the frequency and scale of human-induced earthquakes. Whilst this provides an opportunity to learn about the processes that underlie these events, it also highlights the need for careful monitoring and regulatory policies. This Collection invites original research on induced seismicity, and the tools we use to monitor and predict these events.

Longjun Dong is a Professor in the Department of Safety Science and Engineering at Central South University, China. He holds a PhD, MSc, and BSc in mining engineering. His current research interests include rock mechanics, engineering seismology, natural and man-made hazards and risks, ground instability, geostress control in deep mining, mining geophysics, and applied acoustics. He is a Senior Member of IEEE and a member of ISRM. He has been serving as an Editorial Board Member of Scientific Reports – Earth and Environmental Sciences section – since 2014.

 

Gillian R. Foulger has worked in Earthquake Seismology for over 40 years including developing passive seismic methods to research geothermal areas and application to numerous geothermal fields. Most recently she has worked in human-induced earthquakes. She authored a recent major review paper 'Global review of human-induced earthquakes' (Earth-Science Reviews178, 438-514). She owns and leads the website HiQuake that provides and maintains a global database of human-induced earthquakes. She has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2014.

 

Ian Main is Professor of Seismology and Rock Physics in the School of Geosciences at the University of Edinburgh. He is fascinated by the complex, nonlinear processes that lead up to catastrophic failure events such as earthquakes, rock fracture, and volcanic eruptions, and in quantifying the resulting hazard, including induced seismicity.  He moderated the Nature website debate on Earthquake prediction in 1999, and served as a member of the International Commission on Earthquake Forecasting for Civil Projection in the aftermath of the 2009 L’Aquila Earthquake, Abruzzo. Prof Main has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2017.

 

 

Ecological restoration and rewilding

This is a joint Collection with Communications Biology.

The United Nations General Assembly has declared this upcoming decade the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, highlighting how management and research to restore degraded ecosystems, and reverse the impacts of climate change and biodiversity loss, are being prioritised worldwide. To address this critical need for empirical research evaluating these efforts, we are opening a call for submissions relating to ecological restoration and rewilding to either Scientific Reports or Communications Biology.

We welcome submissions of primary research that examine the application and management of restoration and rewilding in practice, and its impacts on biodiversity and ecosystem functioning in all systems and at all scales. We encourage submissions that investigate these topics in the context of conservation, ecology, and biology, however strictly social-science-based research is outside the scope of the journals and this collection. Other article types, such as Reviews, Perspectives, and Comments can be considered for inclusion in the Collection but only for publication in Communications Biology.

Authors will have the option to submit to either Scientific Reports or Communications Biology, and submissions will be handled by editors across both journals. In the event that a manuscript submitted to Communications Biology is considered to not meet the editorial criteria for advance and novelty at the initial decision, the authors have the option to transfer their manuscript to Scientific Reports and retain their handling Guest Editor, benefitting from shared editors between the journals that allows for a streamlined and accelerated transfer process.

Manuscripts submitted through 2021 are eligible for inclusion in the Collection’s launch, though we may also consider manuscripts for the launch into the New Year.
Submissions will then be welcome on a rolling basis, and accepted papers will be added to it as and when they are published.

About the Guest Editors

 

Dr. Jordi Cortina-Segarra received his PhD in biology from the University of Barcelona. He has studied dryland ecology and restoration, focusing on a wide variety of topics, from seedling ecophysiology to participatory planning. He teaches ecological modelling and ecosystem restoration at the University of Alicante and currently serves as Chair of the European Chapter of the Society for Ecological Restoration.

 

Dr. Shouli Li is a Professor in Ecology & Biodiversity at Lanzhou University, China. Her research focuses on population ecology and environmental decision-making in the areas of ecological restoration, biodiversity conservation, invasive species management and optimal control of infectious disease. Dr. Li joined the editorial board of Communications Biology in April 2020.

 

Dr. Nobuyuki Yamaguchi has lived in Japan, UK, and Qatar, and recently moved to take up a position of an Associate Professor at the Institute of Tropical Biodiversity and Sustainable Development, University of Malaysia Terengganu, Malaysia. His main research interests are evolutionary biology, behavioural ecology, and conservation biology. He has been serving as an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2019.

 

 

3D genome organisation

This Collection will focus on further methodological advances in this field as well as on the applications of these new techniques to study nuclear organization and how genome architecture regulates gene expression.

Joanna M. Bridger is a Professor at Brunel University London and is the Director of the Centre for Genome Engineering and Maintenance (CenGEM). Prof Bridger’s group investigates active and functional chromosome and gene loci dynamics in interphase nuclei, aberrant nuclear structure and its impact on genome organisation and function. Her lab has research interests in genome behaviour in premature and normal ageing, female cancers and interfering with pathogen-mediated host genome manipulation. She has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2015. 

 

Elissa P. Lei is a Senior Investigator and Chief of the Nuclear Organization and Gene Expression Section in the Laboratory of Biochemistry and Genetics at the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases of the National Institutes of Health. She obtained her Ph.D. from Harvard Medical School in the laboratory of Dr. Pamela A. Silver and trained at Johns Hopkins University in the laboratory of Dr. Victor G. Corces as a Jane Coffin Childs Memorial Fund for Medical Research Postdoctoral Fellow. She has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2019.

 

Asli Silahtaroglu is an Associate Professor in Medical Genetics at the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, University of Copenhagen, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. She is interested in genome-wide and locus specific mechanisms regulating and fine-tuning gene expression like 3D genome organization, non-coding RNAs and epigenetics. She also likes methodological projects pushing the limitations to visualize these events taking place within the nucleus through interdisciplinary collaborations. About the Guest Editors

 

Ramon Aguado is a senior scientist at the Institute of Materials Science Institute Madrid (ICMM) of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), Spain. He is a theoretical condensed matter physicist with more than 20 years of research experience, aiming at understanding experiments and making experimental predictions, in various areas revolving around new properties of quantum materials, mesoscopics physics and nanoelectronics. During the last few years, this activity has strongly focused on studying topological materials with applications in quantum technologies. He is the Vice President of the Condensed Matter Physics Division of the Spanish Physics Society and has been serving as Editorial Board Member of Scientific Reports since 2016.

 

Saroj Dash is a Professor and group leader at the Quantum Device Physics Laboratory, Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden. He finished his Ph.D. in Physics from Max Planck Institute, Stuttgart, Germany. His previous positions include postdocs at the University of Twente and the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. The focus of his research is on topological quantum materials-based nanoscale device physics, spintronics with two-dimensional materials, and van der Waals heterostructures. Prof. Dash has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2015.

 

Yuki Shiomi is an experimental physicist working on spintronics and condensed matter physics. He received his PhD from the University of Tokyo in 2012. He spent time at Tohoku University as an Assistant Professor before joining the faculty of the Department of Basic Science at the University of Tokyo in 2018. Prof Shiomi has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2018.

This Collection will highlight the inter-disciplinary nature of this endeavour by bringing together original research across physics, biology, and chemistry, focusing on the development of novel instrumentation, methodology, and planetary science required to retrieve and analyse these samples.

Fairén is an interdisciplinary planetary scientist and astrobiologist, specializing in geochemistry, mineralogy, hydrogeology, sedimentology and environmental microbiology of extremophiles, with a particular focus on understanding the habitability of early Mars and the search for life on Mars and ocean worlds. Prof. Fairén has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2016.

 

Jianghui Ji is a Professor from Purple Mountain Observatory, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). He received his PhD from Nanjing University, China. He was a visiting scholar at Department of Terrestrial Magnetism, Carnegie Institution of Washington, Harvard, Caltech, Connell in U.S. He is currently the Director of CAS Key Laboratory of Planetary Sciences, CAS. His research interests include the orbital evolution of NEOs, physics of asteroids, dynamics of small solar system bodies, and he also focuses on dynamical evolution of exoplanets, planetary formation, physics of protoplanetary disks etc. Prof Ji has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2017.

 

Mónica Sánchez-Román is an Associate Professor of Geology and Geochemistry at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, the Netherlands. She is an Earth scientist (PhD, ETH-Zurich) with specific interests in studying the interactions between biosphere and geosphere with an emphasis in geobiology, geomicrobiology and biogeochemistry. Her research interests are mainly focused on low temperature and environmental geochemistry with a focus on biomineralization and/or mineral-microbe interactions that play a key role in biogeochemical processes. Her goal is to better understand the complex interactions between microbes and minerals, particularly in the Earth’s early history, extraterrestrial planets and extraplanetary bodies. She has a broad interest in biogeochemical cycles, astrobiology, past climate and environmental change as recorded in chemical sediments from both lacustrine and marine systems. Prof Sánchez-Román has been serving as Editorial Board Member of Scientific Reports since 2015.

Actively monitoring the emergence and spread of drug resistance in pathogen populations, characterising underlying molecular mechanisms and developing novel interventional strategies, are all critically important for combating the serious threats posed by AMR. This Collection aims to bring together original research in these key areas and welcomes submissions exploring AMR and countermeasures in bacterial, fungal, viral and protozoan pathogens.

About the Guest Editors

 

Khalid Beshir is an Assistant Professor at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and his research centres on the diagnosis and drug resistance of infectious disease agents. Khalid’s research is particularly focused on understanding how pathogens escape drug treatment and evade diagnosis. At Scientific Reports, Khalid handles manuscripts on malaria and COVID-19 diagnosis as well as antimicrobial resistance, and genetic and genomic epidemiology of different pathogens. Dr. Beshir has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2019.

 

Sascha Brunke is the deputy head of the department Microbial Pathogenicity Mechanisms at the Leibniz-Institute for Infection Biology and Natural Product Research – Hans Knöll Institute (HKI). His research on pathogenic fungi centers on the evolutionary adaptations of Candida species to the human host, and how these adaptations can be subverted for novel antifungal approaches. Prof Brunke has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2019.

 

María Soledad Ramírez is an antibiotic-resistance researcher and Associate Professor of Biological Science at CSUF, CA, USA focuses on the dissemination and evolution of deadly bacterial pathogens, such as Acinetobacter baumannii. She is co-author of 112 peer-reviewed journal articles and has delivered more than 180 research presentations at scientific meetings. The Argentinian native is the recipient of the ICAAC Young Investigator Award from the American Society for Microbiology. She earned a doctorate in microbiology from the University of Buenos Aires. Prof Ramírez has been serving as Editorial Board Member of Scientific Reports since 2019.

 

Jaya Seneviratne is Associate Professor at the National Dental Centre, Singapore. He received his PhD from The University of Hong Kong where he studied the drug resistance mechanism of microbial biofilms. He subsequently completed the Immunology course from HKU Pasteur Institute (Hong Kong) and advanced courses in Proteomics Bioinformatics from EBI/Welcome Trust (UK) and Data Science Machine Learning School from Duke/Duke-NUS (Singapore). Prof Seneviratne has been serving as Editorial Board Member of Scientific Reports since 2017.

 

Amit Singh is an Associate Professor at the Centre for Infectious Disease Research at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. He received his PhD from the University of Delhi, and has since worked at University of Alabama Birmingham, USA, on redox signalling and latency mechanisms in Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), and at the ICGEB in New Delhi where he studied the redox biology of human pathogens in order to dissect the role of redox sensitive transcription factors in Mtb pathogenesis. His current group’s current research is focused on how redox signalling controls the virulence of Mtb and HIV. Prof Singh has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2016.

 

 

Perovskite photovoltaics: stability and scalability

Lakshminaryana Polavarapu is the principal investigator of the Materials Chemistry and Physics research group at the Centro De Investigaciones Biomédicas (CINBIO), University of Vigo (Spain). His current research interests include shape-controlled synthesis and self-assembly of metal and semiconductor nanocrystals for exploring their optical properties as well as a wide range of potential applications such as sensors, LEDs, photovoltaics and photocatalysis. Dr. Polavarapu has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2017.

 

Shuxia Tao is an Assistant Professor of Computational Materials Physics at from Eindhoven University of Technology, the Netherlands. Denia Kolokotsa is Professor of Energy Management and Dean of the School of Chemical and Environmental Engineering of the Technical University of Crete, Greece. Her research interests include energy management for the built environment, energy efficiency, and renewables, indoor environmental quality, energy efficiency in buildings, cool materials, distributed energy management systems, artificial intelligence, green and smart cities, climate change mitigation and adaptation and nature based solutions. Prof Kolokotsa joined Scientific Reports as an Editorial Board Member in 2021.

 

Anna Laura Pisello is a lecturer of Applied Physics and Energy Systems, and Associate Professor of Applied Physics at University of Perugia, Italy, after being visiting research associate at Princeton University (NJ, USA). She is an author of more than 140 papers in international refereed journals. She won seven international academic awards and she is currently the youngest woman to be mentioned in the TopItalianScientists.com. She serves as a member of the teaching board of the Doctorate school of Energy and sustainable development where she has mentoring several PhD students and post-docs about smart materials for urban heat island mitigation, environmental comfort in buildings and smart and resilient cities. Prof Pisello joined Scientific Reports as an Editorial Board Member in 2021.

 

Joel J. P. C. Rodrigues is a Professor at the Federal University of Piauí, Brazil; and Senior Researcher at the Instituto de Telecomunicações, Portugal. He is the leader of the Next Generation Networks and Applications (NetGNA) research group (CNPq), an IEEE Distinguished Lecturer, Member Representative of the IEEE Communications Society on the IEEE Biometrics Council. He was Director for Conference Development - IEEE ComSoc Board of Governors, a Past-Chair of the IEEE ComSoc TCs on eHealth and on Communications Software, and Steering Committee member of the IEEE Life Sciences Technical Community. Prof. Rodrigues is a member of the Internet Society, a senior member ACM and a Fellow of IEEE. Prof Rodrigues joined Scientific Reports as an Editorial Board Member in 2021.

 

Tomonobu Senjyu is currently a Full Professor with the Faculty of Engineering, University of the Ryukyus. He was born in Saga, Japan, in 1963. He received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of the Ryukyus, Japan, in 1986 and 1988, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from Nagoya University, Nagoya, Japan, in 1994. His research interests include ZEH/ZEB, smart cities, renewable energy, robust optimization/control, power system and power electronics. Prof Senjyu joined Scientific Reports as an Editorial Board Member in 2021.

Climate change impacts all of us; its effects are happening now and are threatening to bring abrupt and irreversible changes. The time has come to expedite climate actions and effectively accelerate the energy transition from fossil fuels to alternative and renewable energy sources. Solar, wind, tidal, geothermal energy and bioenergy, as well as advances in energy storage, have already been offering greener alternatives, but a well-known star is rising back and is expected to contribute significantly to the clean energy revolution: hydrogen.

This Collection will gather advances on hydrogen, as well as on alternative energy sources, and aims to foster synergy between multiple energy sources towards the global effort to achieve carbon neutrality.

About the Guest Editors

 

Ioannis (Yannis) Ieropoulos is Professor of Bioenergy & Self-Sustainable Systems and co-founder and Director of the Bristol BioEnergy Centre, at BRL, UWE, with 19 years of research, teaching and training experience. He has an interest in waste utilisation and energy autonomy and produced the EcoBot family of robots powered by microbial fuel cells (MFCs) fed on organic waste, with the latest achievement being Row-bot. He has been an EPSRC Career Acceleration Fellow (2010-2015) and is currently a Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation PI on the "Urine-tricity/PEE POWER®" project (2011-2021), which is advancing the MFC technology for sanitation improvement in Developing World Countries. He is currently the Vice-Chair of the EU COST Action, PHOENIX (2020-2024), a network of 300 EU members looking at environmental remediation. He has been the PI on the EU FET OPEN “Living Architecture” project, now part of the European Innovation Council and on projects focusing on robotics, biodegradable & functional materials, funded by the Leverhulme Trust, EU FP-6, FP-7 and H2020 programmes. Prof Ieropoulos joined Scientific Reports as an Editorial Board Member in 2021.

 

Kui Jiao is a Professor in the State Key Laboratory of Engines at Tianjin University, China. He has published a book on fuel cell water and thermal management and over 200 papers in highly reputable international journals, including a paper in Nature defining the next-generation fuel cell engine. He has led more than 30 national and industrial projects and provided modeling and design services in the development of fuel cell engines for several major automotive fuel cell manufacturers such as SAIC Motor and Bosch. Prof Jiao joined Scientific Reports as an Editorial Board Member in 2021.

 

Simona Liguori is an Assistant Professor of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering and faculty affiliate at the Institute for a Sustainable Environment at Clarkson University. Her research interests are related to the development of membranes and novel multiphase reactors, in particular membrane reactors and dynamically operated reactors. Her research focuses on the synthesis, development and application of these multiphase reactors, where the interactions between heterogenous catalysis and separation lead to a process intensification allowing for clean energy conversion at milder operating conditions. Particularly interesting application areas are hydrogen production by reforming/dehydrogenation reactions with hydrogen selective membranes and ammonia synthesis. Prof Liguori joined Scientific Reports as an Editorial Board Member in 2021.

Tiago M. Fernández-Caramés works as an Associate Professor at the University of A Coruña (UDC) (Spain). His current research interests include IoT/IIoT systems, RFID, wireless sensor networks, augmented reality, embedded systems and blockchain, as well as the different technologies involved in the Industry 4.0 and 5.0 paradigms, where he has contributed to more than 100 papers for conferences, high-impact journals and books, as well as to 6 patents. Prof Fernández-Caramés joined Scientific Reports as an Editorial Board Member in 2021.

 

Paula Fraga-Lamas (IEEE Senior Member) works as a Senior Researcher and Lecturer at the Department of Computer Engineering, University of A Coruña (Spain). She is also member of the CITIC Research Center. Her current work focuses on blockchain and Distributed Ledger Technologies (DLTs), cybersecurity, Industry 4.0/Industry 5.0, IoT, augmented/mixed reality and fog/edge computing. Dr Fraga-Lamas joined Scientific Reports as an Editorial Board Member in 2021.

 

Zhihan Lv is an IEEE Senior Member, British Computer Society Fellow, ACM Distinguished Speaker, Full Member of Sigma Xi, Career-long Scientific Influence Rankings of Stanford's Top 2% Scientists. He is currently a Professor of Qingdao University, China. He has been an Assistant Professor at Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences from 2012 to 2016. He received his Ph.D. from Paris7 University and Ocean University of China in 2012. In addition to being a prolific Editor and author, he has received more than 20 awards from China, Europe and the IEEE. He has received 1.5 million US dollars funding as PI, and been involved in many European and Chinese projects supported with funding of 25 million US dollars. He has given 50 invited talks for universities and companies in Europe and China, and 15 keynote speech for International conferences. Prof Lv has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2020

 

Yushu Zhang is a Professor with the College of Computer Science and Technology, Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, China. He has produced over 100 research peer-reviewed journal and conference papers. His research interests include multimedia security, artificial intelligence, and blockchain. He is an Associate Editor of Information Sciences, Signal Processing and Wireless Communications and Mobile Computing. Prof Zhang joined Scientific Reports as an Editorial Board Member in 2021.

 

 

Stem cell therapy

The loss of healthy cells, though injury or over time, characterises a range of difficult to treat conditions. Stem cells provide a route through which these cells can be replenished, and their transplantation from a range of tissue sources – both autologous and allogeneic – has been identified as a potential therapeutic treatment. However, whilst expectation for their utility in tissue and organ regeneration is high, numerous obstacles to their application remain. This Collection invites research articles investigating stem cell therapy and additionally welcomes submissions focused on overcoming the challenges facing successful stem cell identification, expansion, delivery and engraftment.

About the Guest Editors

 

Cesario V. Borlongan is a Distinguished Professor and Vice-Chairman for Research at USF Morsani College of Medicine’s Department of Neurosurgery and Brain Repair, and Director of the USF Center of Excellence for Aging and Brain Repair. His research interests include pathological examination of the role of impaired mitochondria, splenic response, and gut dysbiosis in the inflammation-plagued secondary cell death that accompanies stroke and traumatic brain injury. In addition, he probes the potential of stem cells in rescuing the mitochondria, silencing the splenic reaction, and normalizing the gut microbiome towards sequestration of both central and peripheral inflammation. Altogether, his strategy is to understand the pathological condition of CNS disorders with a focus on inflammation and its treatment with stem cell-based regenerative medicine. Prof Borlongan has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2019.

 

Patrizia Ferretti is Professor of Regenerative Biology at UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health, London, UK. She has a long-standing interest in mechanisms governing tissue regeneration within the context of normal and abnormal development of the nervous system and of craniofacial structures. Her current work is focused on the modelling of human congenital diseases using stem cells, which continues to implement the successful strategy of addressing basic biological questions and harnessing the information acquired to develop new therapeutic approaches to repair diseased or damaged human tissues in collaboration with material scientists, bioengineers and clinicians. Prof Ferretti has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2015.

 

Paolo Madeddu is a full professor in Cardiovascular Experimental Medicine at the University of Bristol. He obtained his MD in 1976 at the University of Sassari (Italy) and in 1980 became Specialist of Cardiology at the same University. He worked as a Senior Consultant at the Internal Medicine Department and was Chief of the Regenerative Medicine Center in Osilo and Porto Conte Ricerche until 2005. His research is focusing on new solutions to cardiovascular repair and rejuvenation, using gene therapy, protein therapy, and tissue engineering. He has received a substantial contribution to this research from the Medical Research Council, the British Heart Foundation, Heart Research UK, Diabetes UK, JDFR, and the European Community. Prof Madeddu has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2015.

 

Masahiro Tsuji is a Professor at the Department of Food and Nutrition at Kyoto Women’s University. Before this, he was laboratory chief at the National Cerebral and Cardiovascular Center, Osaka. His research interest includes both cell therapies and nutritional approaches for neonatal brain damages. Prof Tsuji has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2014.

 

 

Organoids and organ-on-a-chip systems

A limitation for animal models is that they cannot recapitulate all aspects of complex human disease, or reliably identify potential safety and efficacy issues in humans. However, uniform cultures of human cells lack a physiological context. Tissue engineered organoids and organ-on-a chip systems aim to retain the cell diversity and three dimensional context seen in vivo; they thereby provide a promising approach to model both development and disease in vitro, and offer an alternative to animal models for pre-clinical drug testing. This Collection will focus on newly developed organoid and organ on-a-chip systems, and the application of these systems to explore both organ function and approaches for drug development.

About the Guest Editors

 

Catarina Brito, PhD in Biochemistry & Cell Biology, is a Principal Investigator at iBET (PT), heading the Advanced Cell Models Lab of the Animal Cell Technology Unit of iBET and ITQB-NOVA since 2014. Her research is mostly translational, dedicated to the development of advanced human cell models, employing 3D co-culture strategies, induced pluripotent stem cells and other patient-derived cells, to depict the deregulation of the cellular microenvironment in disease progression and treatment response. Key areas of interest include the innate immune microenvironment in cancer and neurological disorders and immunotherapies. Dr Brito has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2019.

 

Norikatsu Miyoshi is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Gastroentorology and Hepatology at Osaka University, Japan. Prior to this, he worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Masachusetts General Hospital from 2011-2013 before moving to Osaka.  His research interests lie largely in therapy and treatment of gastrointestinal and colorectal cancers, including targeted stem-cell therapies and organoid models. Prof Miyoshi has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2019.

 

Sean Murphy is an Associate Professor at the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine. His research focuses on regenerative medicine and tissue engineering strategies to develop new clinical treatments for disease. These strategies include organ-on-a-chip technologies for disease modeling and drug discovery, use of 3D bioprinting to fabricate new airway tissues for transplantation, and cell therapies to restore normal function to tissue and minimize inflammation and scarring associated with disease. Towards these goals, he has established 3D design and biofabrication techniques, stem cell differentiation methodology, developed novel tissue-specific ECM hydrogel compositions, and performed evaluation of regenerative therapies in large and small transgenic animal models. Prof Murphy has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2019.

 

Yu-Chieh (Jack) Wang is an Assistant Professor at the Dermatology & MCW Cancer Center of the Medical College of Wisconsin. Prof Wang’s research interest is at the interface of stem cell and cancer biology with emphases on molecular mechanisms underlying normal and pathogenic development in human cells. His group is using human stem cell and organoid system to investigate therapeutic responses in cancer and to develop novel treatments. They also have long-standing expertise and interest to study how glycoenzyme functions affect neurodevelopment. Prof Wang has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2017.

 

 

Mitochondrial dysfunction

In the last decade, there has been an increased appreciation for mitochondria as central hubs in a diversity of processes, such as cellular energy, immunity, and signal transduction. As such, mitochondrial dysfunction underlies many diseases, including primary (mutations in genes encoding mitochondrial proteins), and secondary mitochondrial diseases (mutations in non-mitochondrial genes critical for mitochondrial biology), as well as complex diseases with mitochondrial dysfunction (chronic or degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, diabetes, and cancer). Evidence suggests that mitochondrial dysfunction may precede other pathological signs, and be modulated by genetics, environment, and lifestyle. Though mitochondrial dysfunction is a major factor in many disease states, it is often overlooked – or its mechanism unclear – limiting clinical consideration. This collection aims to gather research providing insight into the mechanisms of mitochondrial dysfunction and potential therapeutic options.

Hirofumi Arakawa is a Chief in the Division of Cancer Biology at National Cancer Center Research Institute, Japan, as well as a Visiting Professor in the Department of NCC Cancer Science at Tokyo Medical and Dental University, Japan. His research group investigates the role of mitochondrial droplets in cardiolipin metabolism and tumor suppression. His current research interests include phase separation, membrane-less organelles, mitochondrial quality control, cancer metabolism, and tumor suppressor p53. Prof Arakawa has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2016.

 

Cecilia Giulivi is Director of the Redox Biology Core laboratory at the University of California Davis, USA. She has a strong background and experience in mitochondria bioenergetics and free radical biochemistry reflected in >130 publications. Her focus has been at understanding the underlying dysfunction of mitochondria in autism, 22q11.2 deletion syndrome and triplet nucleotide neurodegenerative diseases such as FXTAS and Huntington’s disease. Prof Giulivi has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2018.

 

Kezhong Zhang is a Professor in the Center for Molecular Medicine and Genetics and in the Department of Biochemistry, Microbiology and Immunology at the Wayne State University School of Medicine. He is also a member of Karmanos Cancer Institute at the Wayne State University. Prof Zhang’s research is focused on molecular mechanisms and physiological roles of cellular stress signalling from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) or mitochondria in inflammation, and metabolism associated with metabolic disease, autoimmune disease, and cancer. Prof Zhang has been an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports since 2014.

 

 

Digital Twin technology

A Digital Twin revolution is on the horizon. A Digital Twin is defined as “a set of virtual information constructs that mimics the structure, context and behaviour of an individual or unique physical asset, that is dynamically updated with data from its physical twin throughout its life-cycle, and that ultimately informs decisions that realize value.” (AIAA, Digital Twin: Definition & Value).

Originally born for aerospace applications, Digital Twins have now been employed in a variety of engineering sectors: from construction to automotive, from healthcare to aerospace, from software engineering to cyber physical systems and blockchains. This Collection will showcase interdisciplinary research and development in Digital Twin technology.

Jiewu Leng is an Associate Professor from Guangdong University of Technology, China. His current research interests include blockchain, smart manufacturing, and digital twin. He has published five ESI 1% highly-cited papers on IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics: Systems, etc. He has chaired several Special Sessions in International conferences including IEEE ICMA 2015, IEEE ICNSC 2018, and CIRP iPS2 2019. He has won two first prizes of the Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Award. Prof Leng joined Scientific Reports as an Editorial Board Member in 2021.

 

Wilson W.S. Lu is Professor in the Department of Real Estate and Construction, Faculty of Architecture, the University of Hong Kong (HKU). He holds a BSc of Computer Science and an MSc of Construction Economics and Management. He was awarded his PhD by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (HK PolyU) in 2006. His research interests focus on Construction Management with three clear directions - international construction (international competitiveness, strategic management, procurement innovation, and corporate social responsibility), construction informatics (Building Information Modelling, smart construction, and big data) and construction waste management (management, economics, and public policies). Prof Lu joined Scientific Reports as an Editorial Board Member in 2021.

 

Xun Xu is a Professor at the University of Auckland, heading the Laboratory for Industry 4.0 Smart Manufacturing Systems (LISMS). He has a PhD in manufacturing from the University of Manchester and has been working in the field of smart manufacturing for about 40 years. Beyond Industry 4.0, his research interests include cloud manufacturing, cyber-physical production systems, STEP-compliant CAD/CAPP/CAM (STEP-NC) and digital twins. Prof Xu joined Scientific Reports as an Editorial Board Member in 2021.
