Cognitive ageing is the age-related change in cognitive function that typically occurs when people get older. A gradual decline of some cognitive abilities such as reasoning ability, memory or processing speed, is a normal part of healthy ageing which can start in adulthood and progresses over the years. However, some individuals may experience a greater deterioration of cognitive abilities, as may be seen in Parkinson’s disease, as well as Alzheimer’s disease or other types of dementia. With ageing populations, difficulties that can arise from cognitive ageing pose a challenge to health and social systems around the globe. As such, identifying factors associated with healthy ageing and age-related cognitive decline as well as developing appropriate support for individuals, where required, are of great importance. This Collection welcomes work from the fields of neuroscience and psychology studying cognitive ageing, its underlying processes, as well as contributing factors.
