Laura Vargas-Parada
Laura Vargas-Parada is a Lecturer in the Biology Department at the School of Sciences, National University of Mexico (UNAM). She received her B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Biomedical Sciences from UNAM and an M.Sc. in Applied Molecular Biology of Infectious Diseases from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, UK. Laura joined the School of Sciences in 1988. From 2004–2008 she was a postdoctoral fellow at the UNAM Science Communication Office, and in 2007 she specialized in Science Communication and Technology in Brazil as an OAS fellow. She is also actively involved in science writing and collaborates with different media in Mexico and abroad.

Laura has taught courses in Molecular Parasitology, Immunoparasitology, and Emergent Infectious Diseases at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and has published in many different areas including parasitology, bioethics, and science communication. She is also a faculty member of the Graduate Program on Philosophy of Science/Science Communication at UNAM. She currently teaches Introductory Molecular Biology of the Cell to Biology majors as part of the university's core curriculum. Laura's research focuses on science communication in medicine and health. Her research has been supported by the National Council of Science in Mexico.
