Protein import into a mitochondrion
A signal sequence at the tip of a protein recognizes a receptor protein on the outer mitchondrial membrane. This causes diffusion of this tethered protein through the membrane to a contact site. When there, the receptor protein hands off the tethered protein to the translocator protein, which channels the unfolded protein past both the inner and outer mitochondrial membranes.
