While mortality associated with COVID-19 has reduced remarkably with the arrival and broad adoption of effective vaccines, it is still a major public health concern, with up to two million new infections reported annually. In this special collection, the editors of npj Vaccines identify articles that illustrate the amazing progress made, but also the challenges that still lay ahead.

This collection invites research on veterinary vaccines with a special focus on One Health in all its dimensions. It extends from protecting human health through pathogen control and elimination in the reservoir hosts to reduction of antibiotics use and the generation of real world evidence for innovative vaccine concepts and technologies.
