About the Editors

Editor-in-Chief

Mohit Kumar Jolly, PhD
Indian Institute of Science
Bengaluru, India

Dr. Jolly leads the Cancer Systems Biology group at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. His research focus is on decoding the underlying design principles of various cell-fate decision networks as well elucidating the emergent dynamics of phenotypic plasticity and non-genetic heterogeneity in multiple biological contexts – cellular differentiation and reprogramming, cancer metastasis and resistance against many therapies.

Managing Editor

Nico Fanget, PhD

Nico obtained his PhD in bacteriology and molecular biology at Edinburgh Napier University. He then moved to scholarly publishing, first as staff editor at the Microbiology Society, then as copy editor at Nature. Nico joined the Nature partner Journals in 2016, and now manages four npj series titles.

He is based in London.

Associate Editors

Reka Albert, PhD
Distinguished Professor of Physics and Biology
Pennsylvania State University
PA, USA

Prof. Albert's research has two main thrusts: collaborating with experimental groups to develop predictive dynamic models of biological systems at various levels of organization and developing network-based dynamical methodologies to drive biological systems to beneficial attractors (phenotypes).

Morgan Craig, PhD
Researcher, Sainte-Justine University Hospital Research Centre
Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics and Statistics, Université de Montréal
Montréal, Canada

Dr. Morgan Craig is a Researcher at the Sainte-Justine University Hospital Research Centre and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the Université de Montréal. Her lab (The Quantitative and Translational Medicine Laboratory) studies how the immune system responds to threats and how differences between individuals affect these responses. For this, she develops predictive, mechanistic mathematical and computational models to study the progression and treatment of cancer and viral infectious diseases through the lens of immunity. Through highly multidisciplinary research conducted in close collaboration with experimentalists and clinicians, Dr. Craig uses in silico clinical trials and virtual patient cohorts to concretely improve therapeutic regimens and patient outcomes.

Jishnu Das headshotJishnu Das, PhD
Assistant Professor, Center for Systems Immunology, Departments of Immunology and Computational & Systems Biology
University of Pittsburgh
PA, USA

As a computational systems immunologist, my research focuses on the development and use of novel systems approaches to analyze high-dimensional immunological datasets, and elucidate molecular mechanisms of immunological disorders. We are currently working on using network systems and functional genomic approaches to perform multi-scale integration of genomic and epigenomic datasets with biological networks to identify molecular phenotypes underlying a range of immunological disorders. We also use statistical and machine-learning techniques to integrate multi-omic datasets (genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic, metabolomic and antibody-omic) and elucidate molecular mechanisms of immune regulation and dysregulation.

Tian Hong, PhD
Associate Professor, Department of Biochemistry & Cellular and Molecular Biology
The University of Tennessee, Knoxville
TN, USA

Tian Hong is a computational biologist with a broad interest in understanding complex biological processes using systems approach. He developed a series of models for epithelial plasticity and immune cell differentiation. He combines mathematical modeling and bioinformatic analysis to understand how gene regulatory networks control cell fates during development and disease progression. He is also interested in the roles of non-coding RNAs at the systems level.

Chunhe Li, PhD
Associate Professor, Shanghai Center for Mathematical Sciences
Fudan University
Shanghai, China

Chunhe Li is an associate professor in Shanghai Center for Mathematical Sciences at Fudan University. His research focuses on computational systems biology, gene regulatory networks, and computational neuroscience. He develops novel approaches for quantifying stochastic dynamics of gene networks to understand the underlying mechanisms of cell fate decisions in various biological systems, such as cell cycle, development, and cancer.

Velia SicilianoVelia Siciliano, PhD
Principal Investigator
Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia-IIT
Naples, Italy

Dr.  Siciliano is Principal Investigator at Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia-IIT. She established the Synthetic and Systems Biology Lab for Biomedicine. She is also honorary fellow of Imperial College London where she still supervises research activities. Velia’s research focus is on designing and prototyping new therapeutic approaches based on non-invasive modification of mammalian cells with a specific focus on T cells. Her work also encompasses the use of DNA or RNA circuits to study biological processes.

Jun Seita, MD, PhD
Team Leader
RIKEN Medical Sciences Innovation Hub Program
Tokyo, Japan

Jun Seita is a Team Leader at the RIKEN Medical Sciences Innovation Hub Program. His team has been studying deep learning on health and medical data, and systems approach for developmental and stem cell biology at a single cell resolution.

Founding Editor-in-Chief

Hiroaki Kitano, PhD
President, Systems Biology Institute and Sony Computer Science Laboratories, Inc
Tokyo, Japan

Hiroaki Kitano is the President of the SBI; he is also President & CEO of Sony Computer Science Laboratories, Inc, Principal Investigator of the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST) and Group Director at the RIKEN Center for Integrative Medical Sciences. He is an expert in the fields of artificial intelligence and bioinformatics and is a leading figure in the emerging field of gene network modeling.

Advisory Editor

Qian Cheng, PhD

Qian joined Nature Communications in September 2022. He received his PhD from the University of Cambridge. He then moved to Oxford and took a postdoctoral computational biologist position at the MRC Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine, where he investigated normal and malignant haematopoiesis by developing novel computational approaches to interpret single cell multi-omics datasets. Prior to Nature Communications, he was a Principal Scientist in AI Biology at a biotech start-up in Beijing. He handles manuscripts relating to the broad field of computational biology. Qian is based in the London office.|
