About the Editors

Like the other Nature titles, Nature Materials has no external editorial board. Instead, all editorial decisions are made by a dedicated team of professional editors, with relevant research and editorial backgrounds.

Chief Editor: Vincent Dusastre, PhD, Springer Nature, UK

Headshot of Chief Editor Vincent DusastreVincent Dusastre gained his first degree in physical chemistry from the Universit√© Paul Sabatier (Toulouse, France), followed by a MSci in materials science from the University of Kent (Canterbury, UK). His research interests during his PhD from University College London and postdoctoral experience at Imperial College London were in the design and investigation of the properties of oxide materials for gas-sensing and fuel-cell applications. He joined Nature in 1999 and launched Nature Materials in 2002. In addition to his duties as Chief Editor, he handles manuscripts in the areas of electrochemistry and materials for energy, including batteries, fuel cells, solar fuels, electro- and photocatalysis. Vincent is based in the London office.

Senior Editor and Team Leader: Stephen Shevlin, PhD, Springer Nature, UK

Headshot of Senior Editor Stephen ShevlinStephen Shevlin received his first degree in theoretical physics from the University of Birmingham, and completed his PhD in theoretical condensed matter physics focusing on atomic-scale wires at University College London. He then worked as a postdoctoral researcher on electronic materials at IBM Zurich and at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, before becoming interested in energy and oxide materials at Queen Mary, University of London, and University College London. At Nature Materials, which he joined in February 2017, Stephen handles manuscripts in the areas of materials chemistry, oxide interfaces and surfaces, ferroelectrics, porous materials, catalysis and energy harvesting. Stephen is based in the London office.

Senior Editor: Xin Li, PhD, Springer Nature, China

Headshot of Senior Editor Xin LiXin Li received her first degree in materials science and engineering from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China. She completed her PhD jointly at Georgia Institute of Technology (US) and University of Lorraine (France), studying epitaxy growth and optoelectronic applications of wide bandgap semiconductors. She continued to work in the Georgia Tech-CNRS UMI as a postdoctoral researcher, and expanded her interests to 2D materials, nanostructures and flexible devices. At Nature Materials, which she joined in April 2017, Xin handles manuscripts in the areas of nanomaterials, structural materials and mechanical properties. Xin is based in the Shanghai office.

Senior Editor: Daniel McNally, PhD, Springer Nature, USA

Headshot of Senior Editor Daniel McNallyDaniel McNally received a BSc in Physics and Astrophysics from University College Cork and a MSc in Physics from Trinity College Dublin in Ireland. He earned his PhD in Physics at Stony Brook University and Brookhaven National Laboratory focusing on strongly correlated materials, with a particular emphasis on neutron scattering. He continued to work on quantum materials using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering as a postdoctoral researcher at the Paul Scherrer Institut, Switzerland. At Nature Materials, which he joined in March 2018, Daniel handles manuscripts in correlated electron systems, topological materials and spintronics. Daniel is currently based in the New York office.

Senior Editor: Bruno Castro PhD, Springer Nature, UK

Headshot of Senior Editor Bruno CastroBruno Castro earned a Bsc in Biochemistry from Lisbon University (Portugal) where he also completed a PhD in Chemistry, focusing on lipid phase separation and protein sorting in cell membrane model systems. He then moved to ICFO - The Institute of Photonic Sciences in Barcelona (Spain), to conduct research in cell membrane organization of immune cells using single molecule and advance fluorescence microscopies. Bruno became a scientific editor at Nature Communications in 2016 and joined Nature Materials in June 2017, where he handles manuscripts in the broad areas of biomaterials and bioengineering, including nanomedicine, drug delivery, bioimaging, tissue engineering, and mechanobiology. Bruno is based in the London office.

Senior Editor: Wei Fan PhD, Springer Nature, China

Headshot of Senior Editor Wei FanWei Fan received his BSc in Physics from Shandong University followed by a PhD in Physics from the Chinese Academy of Sciences studying electron transport in low dimensional systems. He then moved to RIKEN in Japan as a postdoctoral researcher to work on electronic and magnetic properties of oxide heterostructures. He started an editorial career at Nature Communications in 2015 covering many aspect of condensed matter physics, and worked briefly in the Science/AAAS publishing team before joining Nature Materials as an editor in January 2023. He handles manuscripts in applied and device physics including optoelectronics, photovoltaics, flexible electronics and neuromorphic computing. Wei is based in the Beijing office.

Senior Editor: Amos Martinez PhD, Springer Nature, UK

Headshot of Senior Editor Amos MartinezAmos Martinez received his degree in physics from the University of Bath, followed by a MSc in optoelectronics and lasers from St. Andrews University and a PhD in photonics from Aston University (UK).  After his PhD, he divided his time between academia and industry. In the University of Tokyo, he studied the mode-locking of fibre lasers using carbon nanotubes and 2D materials. Back in the UK, after a period as an editor in Nature Communications, he joined Toshiba Research Europe Labs (Cambridge, UK) where he focused on the commercialization of quantum key distribution technologies. Prior to joining Nature Materials in June 2021, he was at the University of Cambridge working towards the commercialization of fibre lasers for coherent Raman microscopy.  At Nature Materials, Amos handles manuscripts in the areas of photonics, plasmonics and metamaterials. Amos is based in the London office.

Senior Editor: Stacey Chin PhD, Springer Nature, USA

Headshot of Senior Editor Stacey ChinStacey Chin received her BSc in Chemistry from Carnegie Mellon University. She earned her PhD in Chemistry at Northwestern University focusing on self-assembled and polymeric materials for soft robotics and tissue engineering. Stacey started an editorial career at Cell Press for the journal Matter in 2019 before joining Nature Materials as an editor in April 2023, where she handles manuscripts in the broad area of soft materials, soft robotics, bioinspired and biomimetic materials, and DNA nanotechnology. Stacey is based in the New York office.
