Mature dendritic cells (DCs) are considered to be terminally differentiated cells that are key triggers for the adaptive immune system. Cao and colleagues (p 1124; News and Views by Shortman and Wu, p 1105) found that stromal cells, which are in intimate contact with DCs in vivo, are able to further induce the differentiation of mature DCs to acquire regulatory properties.
