Kim and colleagues report a technical advance that gives sufficient spatial resolution to image cortical column organization by fMRI in cats. Instead of the traditional positive BOLD fMRI signal, the authors used an earlier, negative phase of the signal to obtain the map of cortical orientation columns shown (image filtered and rearranged for artistic purposes).
