Chief Editor | Chemistry and Biotechnology: Enda BerginEnda joined Nature Portfolio in 2013 as an editor and later team manager at Nature Communications. In 2017 he successfully launched Nature Catalysis, and was Chief Editor for 3 years. In 2020 he returned to Nature Communications as Chief Physical Sciences Editor. Prior to joining the Nature Portfolio he had obtained a PhD in chemistry at University College Dublin, and carried out research at MIT, the University of Cambridge and UEA. He was an Assistant Professor in organic chemistry at Trinity College Dublin, and subsequently worked at the Royal Society of Chemistry across the inorganic chemistry titles. Enda oversees the chemistry and biotechnology content at the journal. He is based in London.

Our team handles manuscripts across a wide variety of topics in physics; from fundamental concepts and proposals to experimental investigations with an applied and engineering emphasis. Our members have diverse and interdisciplinary research backgrounds and collectively we handle the areas of quantum, atomic, plasma, nuclear and high-energy physics, optics, and acoustics.
Team Manager and Senior Editor: Steven LukmanSteven received his first degree in materials science and engineering from Nanyang Technological University (Singapore), followed by a MSc in nuclear physics from University of Tokyo, and a PhD in Physics focusing on optoelectronics and optical spectroscopy from University of Cambridge. After his PhD, he moved to the Agency for Science, Technology, and Research (A*STAR) in Singapore where he investigated the photo-physics of two-dimensional semiconductors for infrared and THz technology. Steven became scientific editor at Nature Communications in 2020 and Nature Materials in 2022. Steven rejoins Nature Communications in December 2022, where he handles manuscripts in the areas of photonics and metamaterials, and he is based in the London office.

Senior Editor: Marco BentivegnaMarco completed his MS in particle physics and his PhD in quantum information and quantum optics in Sapienza University of Rome. For his doctoral research, he worked on quantum computation and simulation using integrated photonic circuits. His post-doctoral appointment involved performing experiments on quantum nonlocality and contextuality. Anita joined Nature Communications in July 2023. She obtained her PhD in Physics from Imperial College London with a thesis on the development of fibre-based nonlinear optical sources for superresolution microscopy. While a researcher, he actively participated in large-scale multidisciplinary academy-industry projects developing novel materials for compressors, with emphasis in the synthesis, characterization, and processing of nanostructured functional materials. Gustavo joined Nature Communications in June 2021 overseeing materials engineering, applied materials, and devices, but now he handles manuscripts across the various fields of engineering. Associate Editor: Pilar Morera MargaritPilar joined Nature Communications in February 2021 where she handles manuscripts in Agroecology. Pilar graduated in Biology at the University of Valencia and continued her education by enrolling into the Green Life Sciences MSc at the University of Amsterdam. Here she had the opportunity to work at the Plant physiology department and to carry on an internship at the Federal University of Viçosa. Following this, Pilar obtained a PhD to investigate insect microbiota at Harper Adams University and The James Hutton Institute in Dundee. She focused on unravelling the role of bacteria associated with the vine weevil, a widespread insect pest, for its pest status and control. Pilar is also passionate about science writing and science communication and likes to write about a wide diversity of topics on her personal science blog.

She obtained a PhD in Evolutionary Anthropology at the University of Toronto for her work studying intraspecific shape variation in the bony labyrinth with Geometric Morphometrics. The Earth team covers all aspects of Earth, environmental and planetary sciences, past, present and future, from the fundamental physical, chemical and biological principles of the Earth system to broader solid Earth processes and surface, ocean and atmospheric dynamics. Team Manager and Senior Editor: Sebastian MüllerSebastian joined Nature Communications in 2018 and handles manuscripts across all Earth sciences and planetary geology. He obtained a PhD in physical Volcanology from LMU Munich, Germany. Sebastian continued as an NSF research fellow at the University of Hawai’i, working on the characteristics of Hawaiian style lava fountaining at Kīlauea Volcano. He collected further work experience at the Colima Volcanology Research Center (Mexico), the Montserrat Volcano Observatory (West Indies), and the Munich Re Georisk Department. Sebastian is based in the Munich office.

Associate Editor: Charles Axelsson Charles handles quantitative and qualitative environmental social science with a focus in urban systems, transportation, economics and policy, water and flooding, and disaster responses. He has a BSc in Geography, an MSc in Environmental Technology, and a PhD in the Science and Management of Climate Change from Universita Ca’ Foscari Venezia’s Department of Economics. His doctoral research was on urban policy adaptations to flooding under climate change, where he assessed policies and stakeholder participation. He is also an advisory editor for npj Urban Sustainability and npj Natural Hazards. He is based in the New York office.
