Based on the design of natural, porous organic nanotubes, Shuangqiao Han et al. fabricate 15 nm thin membranes that can be used for water purification, specifically to filter out boron and phosporus.
Starting in 2016, we have offered authors the option to publish the comments received from the reviewers and their responses alongside the paper. Earthquakes are a natural hazard affecting millions of people globally every year. Researchers are working on understanding the mechanisms of earthquakes and how we can predict them from various angles, such as experimental work, theoretical modeling, and machine learning. We invited Marie Violay (EPFL Lausanne), Annemarie Baltay (USGS), Bertrand Rouet-Leduc (Kyoto University) and David Kammer (ETH Zürich) to discuss how such a multi-disciplinary approach can advance our understanding of Earthquakes.

Evidence for a rosiaite-structured high-pressure silica phase and its relation to lamellar amorphization in quartz
Rapid compression experiments on quartz provide evidence for a metastable high-pressure phase with rosiaite structure. The phase forms as lamellae and breaks down to glass during decompression. These discoveries may solve the enigma of lamellar amorphization of quartz during impact events.
Origins of Barents-Kara sea-ice interannual variability modulated by the Atlantic pathway of El Niño–Southern Oscillation

Here, Beltran et al. determine atomic structures by cryo-electron microscopy of a bacterial conjugative pilus and two archaeal pili, showing that the archaeal pili are homologous to bacterial mating pili.

Defective excitation-contraction coupling and mitochondrial respiration precede mitochondrial Ca2+ accumulation in spinobulbar muscular atrophy skeletal muscle
Marchioretti and colleagues show that in the skeletal muscle of SBMA mice and patients there is an early, but reversible alteration of expression of genes involved in muscle contraction and of mitochondrial respiration, followed by accumulation of calcium inside the mitochondria, which is concomitant with the onset of motor dysfunction, and late alteration of muscle structure.
