Language

Make sure your submission is accurate and readable

  • Submissions should be accessible to non-specialists; you should ensure that your findings are communicated clearly.
  • A shared, basic scientific knowledge may be assumed, but please be aware that the language and concepts that are standard in one subfield may be unfamiliar to colleagues working in another area.
  • Technical jargon should be avoided if possible, and clearly explained where its use is unavoidable.
  • Abbreviations should be kept to a minimum and should be defined when first used.
  • The background, rationale and main conclusions of the study should be clearly explained.
  • Titles and abstracts should be written in language that is easily understood by any scientist.
  • No paper will be rejected for poor language.

Presenting your work in well-written English gives it its best chance for editors and reviewers to understand it and evaluate it fairly. Many researchers - especially but not only non-native English speakers—find that Springer Nature Author Services can improve how their manuscripts are read and can make it easier for readers to appreciate the work.
