Genome Variation in Precision Medicine 2018

The aim of this conference is to take advantage of the past decade of enormous progress in understanding the human genome and the flourishing discoveries in clinical genetics and genetic epidemiology in order to identify and match therapeutic strategies more accurately to the people and populations that are best suited to benefit from them.

We bring together research strategies in functional genomics and epigenomics to understand the ways that individual and population level genetic variation influence health and disease. We discuss the increasingly important patient perspective through the tools of national biobanks for genomic medicine and the potential for open linked healthcare data to galvanize both research and healthcare delivery. This year we focus on two translational areas where genomic findings are already bringing the reading and rewriting of genomes to bear in the clinic. Firstly, we address the genetics of the senses: eyes, ears and other peripheral sensory structures have multiple vulnerabilities originating in the genome, to spontaneous and heritable mutations affecting their development and function as well as to common genetic variants predisposing to their impairment and degeneration by aging and other environmental influences. Then we examine the genetics of reproduction: the mechanisms and vulnerabilities of early embryonic development, causes of infertility and mutation, and the reprogramming of cells for regenerative medicine.
