Postdoctoral fellowship to study gene regulation in Helicobacter pylori

Postdoctoral fellowship to study gene regulation in Helicobacter pylori

Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics

Umeå, Sweden

One postdoctoral fellowship for 2 years is open at the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics. Our department offers a stimulating international research environment with access to advanced equipment (www.medchem.umu.se) and via the location in the Chemical Biological Centre (www.kbc.umu.se) to technical platforms. We are looking for a highly motivated candidate to work within the project “The Helicobacter pylori adhesion protein SabA and mechanisms that control gene expression”.

Project description
The bacterium Helicobacter pylori persistently infects the stomach in half of the human population for lifetime. The overall aim of the project is to increase the understanding of bacterial factors that promote persistent infection and the association to disease development. We have previously generated new knowledge from in vivo and in vitro systems to in molecular terms describe how H. pylori fine-tune gene expression to adapt to its local environment. Using the H. pylori inflammation-associated adhesion protein SabA as model system, this project aims to continue the research and now seek to unravel molecular mechanisms that describe how H. pylori respond to gastric key-environmental factors and in particular to pH. The candidate will use genetic, molecular biology and biochemical approaches to analyze the bacterial responses.

Qualifications
Candidates should have a PhD degree, or equivalent, in microbiology, molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry or a related discipline. We are seeking a highly motivated applicant that has extensive laboratory experience in microbiology, molecular biology or biochemical methods. Experiences in molecular cloning, expression of recombinant proteins and biochemical analyses of DNA-protein interactions are an advantage. An ability to work independently as well as in a team, and good skills in the English language, are essential.

Applications
The application should contain (1) cover letter describing your scientific background (1-2 pages); (2) CV with full publication list and copies of the relevant degree certificates and a list of university courses; (3) a description of research experiences, as well as (4) names and contact information of at least two reference persons. Your complete application should be sent in PDF format to anna.arnqvist@umu.se no later than May 31, 2019.
