Field Experimentation Manager
Applications are invited for a Field Experimentation Manager (FM) to join the Field Experimentation Team at the John Innes Centre based in Norwich, UK.
The post holder will assist JIC scientists in delivering world leading research mainly in the genetics of wheat, brassica, and legume crops. The JIC Field Experimentation team (currently 6 staff) is based in JIC’s brand new state of the art field facility near the village of Bawburgh, Norfolk.
This building serves the JIC owned Church Farm (100 Ha) on which the post holder will coordinate experiments extended of 10-20 Ha every year. These experiments typically comprise several thousand lines in replicated and randomised experimental designs in plot formats from single plants to 12m2. Scientists use these experiments to identify genes controlling disease resistance, yield, abiotic stress tolerance, and nutritional traits.
Innovative approaches to impose treatments (e.g. drought, nutrient level, light quality, temperature, disease pressure) are implemented at Church Farm and other sites used by JIC when appropriate. Collection of phenotypic data using ‘phenomics’ tools is now routine and hands on development of these tools will be an important part of future field work. The post holder will enjoy strong involvement with the inception and design of these experiments and lead their execution and long term planning for the continued development of the Field Experimentation platform at JIC. They will constantly engage with science and support groups at JIC at all levels.
The ideal candidate:
The successful applicant will have experience of managing field experiments, excellent management skills, and take pleasure in communicating with a broad community of users in complex scenarios.
They will have relevant experience of collating requirements for multiple users, crop species, and experimental treatments for field experiments. The FM will also have experience in drilling/planting of experiments and the preparation of plants and seeds for the field and organising and overseeing harvest of experiments.
The successful candidate will have direct experience of science communication and of scientific research (commercial or public).
Salary on appointment will be within the range £39,150 to £47,850 per annum depending on qualifications and experience. This is a full time post offered on a permanent basis.
