Salary: Grade 7: £32,236 - £39,609 p.a.
Applications are invited for a full-time Postdoctoral Research Scientist position, reporting to Professor Deborah Goberdhan and to work alongside Dr Elizabeth Bird-Liebermanns group on an exciting Cancer Research UK-funded research project developing a non-invasive means of screening those at risk of developing oesophageal cancer. This project focusses on colorectal cancer and a type of cellular communication involving small vesicles, known as exosomes, which can contribute to the development of cancer. Dr Elizabeth Bird-Lieberman is a clinician and endoscopist who will be able to direct the work towards clinical outcomes with meaningful patient benefits.
The postholder will be responsible for undertaking a body of work with the aim of identifying extracellular vesicle proteins and RNAs to use in combinatorial assays to detect early stage oesophageal cancer using patient serum. This will involve proteomic and miRNA analysis of EVs isolated from oesophageal cell lines representing both early and late stage disease, followed by immuno-affinity bead-based assays from cell culture medium and then serum.
You will manage academic research and administrative activities; contribute ideas for the development of the research project and ideas for generating research income and assist in preparing grant applications. You will also write up results and test hypotheses and analyse scientific data generated. You will act as a source of information and advice to other members of the group and assist less experienced researchers with new methodologies. You will carry out collaborative projects with colleagues in partner institutions, including the preparation of scientific reports and journal articles. You will be required to represent the research group at external forums.
You will hold, or be near completion of a PhD/DPhil, with relevant experience and/or subsequent postdoctoral work. You will have sufficient specialist knowledge to contribute to the project, for example, experience in cell culture, western analysis, RNA analysis, extracellular vesicle analysis and immuno-affinity separation techniques. You will have previous experience of contributing to publications and presentations. You will also have enthusiasm for the project and motivation to work effectively. The ability to undertake complex multi-stage experiments with a high degree of reproducibility and excellent communication skills.
The post will be based in the in the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics, Le Gros Clark Building, South Parks Road, Oxford OX1 3QX.
The post is fixed-term and for 1 year, starting no later than 1 November 2019.
