Research Technician

Research Technician

European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL)

Heidelberg, Germany

About the team/job

We are looking for a Research Technician to join the group of Dr. Alexander Aulehla in the Developmental Biology Unit at the EMBL Heidelberg, Germany. Our group uses a combination of mouse genetics and real-time imaging in order to address the role of timing and signalling dynamics during embryonic development.

Your role

You will take part in research projects aiming to characterize the role of oscillatory signalling dynamics during embryonic development, using both mouse and fish (medaka) animal models. You will generate novel reporter lines using ES-cell and CRISPR/Cas approaches to generate customized mouse and fish lines to investigate signalling dynamics in vivo.

Furthermore, you will employ various techniques (real-time imaging, embryo culture, In situ mRNA hybridization, biochemistry assays) in order to analyze these novel reporter lines during embryonic development, in both wild type and genetically modified/mutant lines.

You will also share responsibility for general laboratory management, including administration of mouse/medaka lines and other lab resources, scheduling lab duties and ensure training of new group members in various techniques.

You have

As our ideal candidate, you should hold an appropriate degree from a university or technical school training in molecular and cell biology. Expertise in molecular biology/biochemistry is essential. Previous experience with mouse and/or fish models will be extremely valuable, but on-the-job training would be provided if required. Excellent working knowledge of English is required to succeed in this job.

You might also have

Familiarity with cell culture (preferably ES-Cell culture) and histology techniques is an advantage.

Why join us

EMBL is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organisation with a very collegial and family friendly working environment. The remuneration package comprises a competitive salary, a comprehensive pension scheme, medical, educational and other social benefits, as well as financial support for relocation and installation, including your family and the availability of an excellent child care facility on campus.

What else do I need to know

We are Europe’s flagship research laboratory for the life sciences – an intergovernmental organisation performing scientific research in disciplines including molecular biology, physics, chemistry and computer science. We are an international, innovative and interdisciplinary laboratory with more than 1700 employees from many nations, operating across six sites, in Heidelberg (HQ), Barcelona, Hinxton near Cambridge, Hamburg, Grenoble and Rome.

Our mission is to offer vital services in training scientists, students and visitors at all levels; to develop new instruments and methods in the life sciences and actively engage in technology transfer activities, and to integrate European life science research.

Please note that appointments on fixed term contracts can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of the review.
