We offer a fellowship for postdoctoral research in our laboratories at the Department of Molecular Biology, Umeå University, Sweden. The department is the host of Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden (MIMS), a partnership of EMBL (http://www.mims.umu.se).
The abilities to assemble inflammasomes and to generate enormous repertoires of antigen receptors that tag pathogens for elimination play major roles in protecting higher organisms from infections. However, defects in these processes are also associated with the development of tumours and other diseases such as inflammatory disorders. We are interested in understanding the detailed mechanisms of inflammasome regulation and the antibody diversification processes in the immune system. The studies expand to experiments addressing the tight regulation of inflammasomes during infection and inflammation (Erttmann SF et al. Immunity (2016) 45: 106) and experiments providing evidence for the existence of a mutasome, a DNA repair complex, or complexes, that carries out somatic hypermutation (SH) and class switch recombination (CSR) of antibody genes in B lymphocytes (Kumar A et al. J. Immunol (2018) 200: 4146). The successful candidate will participate in projects with the aim to analyze in depth protein-protein interactions during the regulation and complex assembly of inflammasomes and mutasomes using mass spectrometry analyses in combination with immunological techniques.

Successful candidates should have received a Ph.D. degree in molecular biology, biochemistry, immunology or a related discipline and have experience relevant for the project. It is highly meritorious if the applicant has documented practical experience in proteomic analysis with mass spectrometry, preferably Ion Mobility Mass Spectrometry with SYNAPT G2-Si instrument or other Waters mass spectrometers. Experience with mass spectrometry data and LC-MS/MS data analyses in particular is also an advantage. Laboratory experience of analyses of eukaryotic cell systems with immunological and biochemical techniques, FACS, cell sorting, microscopy and other techniques are meritorious. The candidate is expected to execute his or her project independently but also in close collaboration with other members of the research groups. Very good written and oral communication skills in English are essential.
