General Purpose: 

The Research Support Specialist is a leadership position in the West Campus Imaging Core. The Specialist will be responsible for day-to-day operations of the Core including managing and expanding the user base, maintaining all instrumentation, implementing strategic vision for imaging capabilities, identifying and pursuing funding opportunities. providing consultative and training services to researchers, and providing hands-on expertise in the preparation of biological samples for imaging.

The Specialist will serve as an expert resource by instructing Core users in fundamental and advanced imaging techniques, developing training lectures and hands-on courses, and disseminating constructive and instructional information related to current imaging techniques and instrumentation. The Specialist will create a collaborative and engaged user community, and contribute to the broader research missions of the campus.

The mission of this West Campus Imaging Core is to provide the Yale research community with shared access to state-of-the-art instrumentation across multiple imaging platforms and techniques, technical expertise, and assistance in optimal image collection. The Core supports ongoing work from 7 collaborative multidisciplinary research institutes with an emphasis at interfaces with biology. Imaging techniques provided by the Core include standard fluorescence, confocal, laser microdissection, and AFM.


Required Education and Experience: 

Bachelor’s Degree in a related field and eight to ten years related work experience in a research development facility, supervising and overseeing facilities operations or the equivalent combination of education and experience.


Qualifications:

  • Broad understanding of various imaging techniques including hands-on problem solving ability and excellent written and oral communications.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills and a customer-oriented approach to assist, support and train facility users.
  • Ability to balance scientific and technical responsibilities with management of a Core facility.
  • Proven ability to work effectively and collaborate with a diverse team to troubleshoot and problem solve in the support and instruction of students, post doctoral fellows and other researchers.
  • Proven track record in grant preparation; mastery of wide-field and confocal imaging.
  • Preferred Education and Experience: Ph.D. in biology, physics or a related field with at least 3-5 years postgraduate experience in an academic or industrial environment. Expertise in image analysis and imaging applications in microfluidic devices. Prior experience working in and/or overseeing a multi-user microscopy facility.
