The MRC Cancer Unit (MRC CU) is a University Department situated on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. It provides an outstanding environment for cancer research, supporting some 10 research groups and ~150 bench scientists. The successful candidate will join Dr Christian Frezza’s research group https://www.mrc-cu.cam.ac.uk/research/Christian-frezza-folder
The successful candidate will be involved in the characterisation of the oncogenic events associated with the loss of the tumour suppressor Fumarate Hydratase, an enzyme of the Krebs cycle mutated in kidney cancer. The ideal candidate is familiar with a wide range of molecular biology techniques, epigenetics, and cancer metabolism. They are expected to undertake cutting edge research and to act independently to plan experiments, solve scientific problems and apply new techniques when required. Candidates are expected to communicate effectively with a diverse range of individuals and contribute to the smooth running of the Frezza laboratory. They will actively contribute to the training and mentoring of new members of the laboratory and work independently in the preparation of oral presentations and manuscripts for publication.
The role holder must have obtained or be close to obtaining a PhD in Cancer Biology. For candidates with a PhD the salary will be on the scale £32,236 – £39,609 pa depending on relevant postdoctoral experience. Candidates without a PhD or due to complete their PhD within 6 months of their start date will be appointed at the Research Assistant level with a salary of £29,515 (Grade 5) and, if applicable, advancing to Grade 7 Research Associate level following the conferment of their PhD.
Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 28 February 2024 in the first instance.
