CANS currently involves fourteen research groups located at three faculties and covers topics within marine bioprospecting – identification and characterization of new antibacterial activities, design and synthesis of new antibiotics and resistance inhibitors, the evolution and molecular epidemiology of AMR, host-microbe-drug interactions as well as antibiotic stewardship. The centre aims to strengthen current activities, but also support new basic research in novel concepts for sustainable antibacterial activities in AMR-prevention and treatment strategies through new permanent and temporary (tenure-track, postdoc and PhD) positions.

The position`s affiliation

The candidate is expected to perform independent research associated with the organic chemistry group within the Department of Chemistry (IK) in close collaboration with CANS. Active participation in CANS to build interdisciplinary excellence, is required in this position. IK is one of six departments at the Faculty of Science and Technology, UiT. Currently, IK provides education on the Bachelor-, Master-, and PhD-levels and comprises 27 permanent positions and a technical-administrative staff of 12 persons. The field of research

We are looking for a candidate who has a research background in the development of innovative molecules that can contribute to solve antimicrobial resistance (AMR) challenges. The research should focus on the development of new molecules that address AMR e.g. through the identification of new drug targets, understanding of biological function, development of new antibiotic agents or diagnostic tools. Organic synthesis should be an essential methodology in the research. We welcome competitive candidates’ research perspectives within the outlined frame-work. All candidates must submit a statement of their vision for how they will strengthen this research.

Qualification requirements

The candidate:

  • Must document a Norwegian doctoral degree or a corresponding foreign doctoral degree, or competence at a corresponding level documented by academic work of the same scope and quality.
  • Must document a high international standard and experience in executing independent original research in the field of synthetic organic chemistry with a focus on medicinal or biological applications. The assessment will emphasise scientific publications in internationally recognised peer review journals.
