Research Fellow in Health Services Research Implementation ACAD103852

£43,267 – £48,677 per annum pro rata

We are seeking to appoint a talented researcher with expertise in research implementation and interested in working across a range of topics in applied health services research. This new post will be jointly funded by the NIHR Health Protection Research Unit (HPRU) in Evaluation of Interventions http://www.hpruei.nihr.ac.uk/ and the NIHR Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care West (CLAHRC West) https://clahrc-west.nihr.ac.uk/.

The HPRU’s aim is to support intervention, development and evaluation to inform clinical and public health policy, practice and guidance. We also aim to develop new and better methodologies to support evaluation research, both in the laboratory and through statistical and analytical innovation. Our research team includes specialists in epidemiology, paediatrics, primary care, sexual health, evidence synthesis, statistical and mathematical modelling, behavioural science, health psychology, qualitative methods, health economics, trial design, and patient and public involvement. Our research findings, and other applied health research produced by local scientists, are not always easily implementable. Further research is often needed to understand the wider context of the findings and mechanisms that will lead to changes in current practice and/or wider uptake in the health and social care system. The implementation of research requires consideration of people, patients, organisations, structures, technologies etc. and understanding of how they interact. This post will support research implementation led by Professor Matthew Hickman, Co-Director of the HPRU, and there will also be the opportunity to collaborate with research teams at NIHR CLAHRC West (https://clahrc-west.nihr.ac.uk/). The post-holder will be based in Population Health Sciences within Bristol Medical School at the University of Bristol. The post will be available for 12 months in the first instance.

The post holder will conduct research and support activities aiming to

  • ensure that HPRU studies have maximum impact on clinical practice and policy, and
  • promote evidence-informed decision-making about the design, organisation and delivery of healthcare and public health services and interventions.

The post will suit researchers with relevant training or experience of undertaking public health services or applied health research. Knowledge and understanding of at least one of the following: implementation science methodology, knowledge mobilisation, or quality improvement would also be highly beneficial. Applicants will want to develop and extend their careers by undertaking a number of different projects and gaining experience in implementation of research techniques.
