DESY is one of the world’s leading research centres for photon science, particle and astroparticle physics as well as accelerator physics. More than 2400 employees work at our two locations Hamburg and Zeuthen in science, technology and administration.
DESY looks back on a lang tradition in synchrotron radiation experiments in a wide range of applications and has developed into one of the leading international centers in this field. For high-end synchrotron radiation applications, the 3rd generation source PETRA III is available since 2009 as one of the most brilliant X-ray sources worldwide. The Broad Band Diffraction Beamline P21.1 is specialized in the development and application of high-energy X-ray diffraction techniques for single crystals and weakly ordered materials. Scientifically the experiments aim to gain a deeper understanding of the local order and the structure - properties relationship in functional materials. The candidate should pursue their own reasearch project. applying total scattering in combination with pair distribution function analysis and enable the high-energy X-ray diffraction user community to successfully perform state-of-the-art experiments.
The positionWork in a highly team-oriented environment in very close collaboration with the user communityDevelop and actively pursue an own inhouse research program related to the study of weakly ordered materials by X-ray total scatteringUser support at P21.1Develop instrumentation and data processing at beamline P21.1
RequirementsPhD in materials science, physics, chemistry, or equivalent qualificationProfound knowledge and expertise in high-energy X-ray diffraction techniquesExperience with pair distribution function analysis, strong interest in developing related software for data treatment and evaluationHigh-level experimental and computational skillsExperimental experience at 3rd generation synchrotron sourcesAbility to work as part of a multidisciplinary team and excellent knowledge of English
Salary and benefits are commensurate with those of public service organisations in Germany. Classification is based upon qualifications and assigned duties. Handicapped persons will be given preference to other equally qualified applicants. DESY operates flexible work schemes. DESY is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer and encourages applications from women. Vacant positions at DESY are in general open to part-time-work. During each application procedure DESY will assess whether the post can be filled with part-time employees.
