Post-doctoral research position (m/f/d)

Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK)

Potsdam, Germany

The climate needs bright minds. The Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) addresses crucial scientific questions in the fields of global change, climate impacts and sustainable development. It is one of the world’s leading research institutions in its field and offers natural and social scientists from around the world an inspiring environment for excellent interdisciplinary research.

For a new project “Modelling of long-term future climate evolution using a hierarchy of Earth system models“ PIK is offering a

*Post-doctoral research position (m/f/d)
in the field of Earth system modelling, starting not later than 01.05.2019.
(Position number: RD1-Postdoc-10-2019)

The position is funded for 2 years with a possibility of additional 1 year renewal. Remuneration is in accordance with German public tariff scheme (TV-L Brandenburg), salary group E13, according to personal qualification. This is a full-time position with a weekly working time of 40 hours per week.

Understanding future climate dynamics on a time scale of millions of years remains rather poor. This hampers reliable predictions of long-term future climate change under different anthropogenic forcing scenarios. By using unique methods with novel Earth system models developed at PIK, we aim to perform quantitative assessments of long-term future climate change scenarios, including the timing and magnitude of future glacial cycles. This information is essential for finding optimal and safe solutions for the permanent storage of nuclear wastes.

Key responsibilities:
performing long-term future simulations with an Earth system model of intermediate complexity for a set of anthropogenic emission scenarios
further development of a simplified model of glacial cycles and performing probability assessments of future glacial cycles for up to 1 million years future perspective
performing comprehensive analysis of model results and providing project partners with the required information, participating project meetings and contributing to project reports
presenting results at international conferences, publishing results in academic journals

PhD in physics or earth sciences
experience in mathematical modelling, preferably, in the field related to climate or environmental sciences is absolutely cruicial for this position
programming skills in higher programming language, preferably FORTRAN, will be a significant advantage
a strong motivation and good organizational skills
team-oriented, strong oral communication and writing skills

We offer
the chance to be part of a creative, interdisciplinary and international team
a stimulating working environment in an internationally recognized research institute on Potsdam’s beautiful, historic Telegrafenberg campus, a short commuting distance from Berlin
contributing to the solution of long-term safe storage of nuclear wastes within a research project funded by the Swiss technical competence centre Nagra (National Cooperative for the Disposal of Radioactive Waste)
collaborating with experienced project partners working in the field of climate and cryosphere modelling
cooperating with PIK’s national and internationally renowned research partners
a collective pay scheme and associated benefits

PIK seeks to increase the share of women in scientific positions and therefore explicitly encourage women to apply. In cases of equal qualification and within the given legal scope, women will be given preference. Applications by persons with a migration background are expressly encouraged.
