Ref.02.19.06 Spintronics Microfabrication and Nanofabrication Engineer

Employer: International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL)

Location: Braga, Portugal

Department: Nanoelectronics Engineering

Group/Unit: Spintronics

Job Type: Full time

Contract Duration: 24 months

Closing Date: April 1st, 2019 23:00 (WET)

Salary: Competitive package and benefits

INL is seeking a highly-qualified, self-motivated engineer to reinforce its cleanroom staff with a focus on the activities concerning Spintronics.  This position will be funded by several running research projects and contractual research agreements with private companies.

Job Role & Key Responsibilities

The candidates will have three major responsibilities:

1) Participate in the production of micron sized MTJ sensor wafers (200mm) integrated in running industrial contracts.

2) Participate in the production of sub-micron sized MTJ nano-oscillator wafers (200mm) integrated in running industrial contracts and research contracts.

3) Participate in a continuous effort to improve the existing microfabrication and nanofabrication processes.  To this end, the candidate will be responsible of running test lots where specific process steps will be optimized aiming at improving key process metrics, either by reducing the dispersion of parameters extracted at device level or improving the key figure of merit of devices optimized for specific applications.

4) Take responsibility for tasks related with the performance monitoring of specific tools and associated service operations.

The candidates might assist the efforts of micro and nanofabrication of spintronic devices in the framework of national, European and industrial projects and training of users in the operation of the tools under their responsibility.

Desired Skills and Experience

Mandatory requirements:

  • A degree and/or Master degree in Physics, Physical Engineering, Materials Science, Electronics, or other relevant subject is required.
  • Previous hands-on experience in the deposition, micro/nano-fabrication of magnetic tunnel junctions or characterization of magnetic tunnel junction devices.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English is absolutely mandatory.

The lack of any of the above requirements will result in the automatic exclusion of the candidate.

Desired Experience:

  • Previous hands-on experience depositing magnetic tunnel junction stacks.
  • Previous hands-on experience performing ion milling of magnetic tunnel junction micro-pillars or nano-pillars.
  • Previous hands-on experience in the operation of mask aligners for the production of features down to ~1-5 µm.
  • Previous hands-on experience using SINGULUS deposition systems and/or NORDIKO Ion Milling systems from a service/engineering perspective.
  • Previous experience in the full microfabrication process of magnetic tunnel junction devices (in particular, magnetoresistive sensors, MRAM devices or spin torque nano-oscillators).
  • A PhD degree obtained with a thesis based on the hands-on microfabrication of devices based on magnetic tunnel junctions.

The candidates will be valued positively by fulfilling the desired experience traits listed above.  Fulfilling all the desired traits is not required, but candidates unable to fulfill any of them will be automatically excluded.

The work plan will be developed at the INL under the scientific guidance of Dr. Ricardo Ferreira. The successful candidate will be integrated in the Spintronics group.

Duration of the contract
