A postdoctoral
position is available in the laboratory of Alexey Terskikh, Development, Aging,
and Regeneration Program, Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute,
La Jolla, California.

position focuses on the novel approach to study epigenetics at a single cell
level. The candidate will explore the capability of Microscopic Imaging of
Epigenetic Landscape (MIEL) (Farhy et
al., 2018, 2019 biorxiv
) and fluorescence-based genetically encoded epigenetic
reporters enabling live imaging of epigenetic modifications at a single cell
level. MIEL combines fluorescence detection of epigenetic marks with automated
cell imaging and machine learning to profile and quantify the “epigenetic
signatures” of individual cells.
The Postdoctoral Associate will investigate the epigenetic
heterogeneity at the single cell level and the asymmetry during stem cell
division in different systems including normal and neoplastic neural stem cells
focusing on the epigenetic function of SOX2, as wel as normal and pathological
(Alzheimer) aging process. A long-standing question of this project is to
determine whether the outcome of stem cell division is stochastic or
deterministic and whether such outcome could be prospectively predicted based
on the epigenetic landscape of the mother cell.


Primary Responsibilities

  • Performs tissue culture and animal (mice)
    experiments as required by the project design.

  • Collects fluorescent images and analyze the data
    using custom built pipelines incorporating Cell Profiler, MATLAB, and custom-built

  • Uses cellular and animal models to discover
    networks and pathways and to generate functional predictions and testable

  • Independently designs and performs experiments
    and procedures with high degree of complexity, demonstrating increasing
    expertise with a wide range of techniques

  • Writes reports, manuscripts, and applications
    for funding with increasing responsibility over time

  • Works collaboratively across lab functions and
    train other junior lab staff as needed


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Qualified candidates should be proficient in molecular and
cellular biology, fluorescent microscopy, computation biology, network analyses
including expertise in high-throughput data analyses. Familiarity with gene expression
analysis is highly desirable. Programming skills (Python, R, Java or C++ and
Unix/Linux shell) is a huge plus. The knowledge of machine learning approaches is
highly desirable. The successful candidate should have a demonstrated ability
for independent and critical thinking, excellent communication and teamwork
skills, and strong publication record (at least one first-author publication is


Required Experience

    PhD in Biological/Biocomputational
sciences is required, with dual expertise in cell biology and computation

    1-2 years of
experience in Computer Science or Life Science lab after PhD degree in Biological/
sciences is preferred
