This position is located in the Lahti University Campus. ( The Ecosystems and Environment Research Programme of the University of Helsinki has three professors in Lahti, in environmental biotechnology, urban ecosystem studies, and aquatic ecotoxicology in an urban environment. The successful applicant may be appointed to a permanent full professorship or a fixed-term associate / assistant professorship (tenure track) depending on their qualifications and career stage.

We seek an internationally competitive researcher with a strong academic track-record in urban ecology. The research, undergraduate and graduate teaching and supervision of the position is in the field of urban environmental research, focusing on human-altered terrestrial and/or aquatic milieus from the molecular to ecosystem level. Aspects of the position can be to explore how biodiversity relates to urbanization, the linkage between biological diversity and ecosystem processes in disturbed environments, the socio-ecological nature of the heterogeneous urban milieu, and how these contribute to the planning and management of urban green and blue spaces.

An appointee to a professorship shall hold a doctoral degree and have top-level scholarly qualifications, experience in the supervision of scientific research, the ability to provide top-level teaching based on research and to supervise theses and dissertations as well as the documentation of international cooperation in the research field that the appointee represents.

An appointee to an associate / assistant professorship shall hold a doctoral degree, have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work and have the teaching skills necessary for the position. Other requirements shall include the ability and motivation to pursue a scientific career, as demonstrated through publications or otherwise.

When considering the applicant’s qualifications, attention shall be given to scientific publications, teaching experience and pedagogical training as well as the applicant’s participation in doctoral education. Furthermore, account shall also be taken of the applicant’s activity in the scientific community, success in obtaining external research funding, international research experience and elected positions in Finnish and international organizations. The teaching of the appointee will mainly be allocated to the Bachelor of Science Programme in Environmental Sciences and the Master’s Programme in Environmental Change and Global Sustainability (ECGS).

There is no requirement for foreign citizens, non-native Finnish citizens or citizens who have not been educated in Finnish or Swedish to be proficient in Finnish. To successfully attend to the duties of the position, the appointee must have good skills in English.

Annual gross salary for an assistant/associate professor amounts to 50,000 – 68,500 euros and for full professor to 64,000 – 96,000 euros.
