Introduction

INL is seeking an outstanding and highly motivated young researcher in Physics, Photonics, Nanoengineering, or related area to conduct world-leading research in the development of energy efficient and high-speed brain-inspired (neuromorphic) nanophotonic integrated chip technologies for emerging artificial intelligence (AI) systems.

The research project forms part of a large European H2020-FETOPEN project: ChipAI (no 828841), coordinated by the supervisor of the selected candidate. In the framework of the ChipAI project, the candidate will have the unique opportunity to interact with leading European universities and major industrial partners in the areas of photonic integration and neuromorphic computing and to work in a highly interdisciplinary team. The selected candidate is expected to have the oportunity to enrol in a PhD programme during the research project.

Job Role & Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will work on the design, fabrication and characterization of energy-efficient and high-speed brain-inspired (neuromorphic) and photonic integrated chip technologies for artificial intelligence systems. She/he will be assigned the following working plan:

-  Design and nanofabrication of neuromorphic nanoscale semiconductor light-emitting diode sources;

-  Optoelectronic advanced characterization of neuromorphic nanoscale nanophotonic integrated chips;

-  Development artificial intelligence systems based on the implemented neuromorphic nanophotonic circuits.

Job Requirements

Applicants should meet the following requirements:

Master’s degree in Engineering Physics, Physics, Photonics or related field;

Hands-on experience with photonic simulation and modeling tools (e.g., mode solvers, Finite-difference time-domain methods) and programming (e.g. Matlab, Labview) is positively evaluated;

•Experience with semiconductors, III-V compound materials, low-dimensional nanostructures (e.g. quantum dots, wires, wells), solid-sate emitters (LEDs, lasers), and optical communications is preferred;

•Electronic-photonic design and layout software (e.g. CAD), and optical characterization equipment and techniques (e.g. micro-electroluminescence and time-correlated single-photon counting) will be an advantage.

•Fluency in English is required.

Supervision

The work plan will be developed at the INL under the scientific guidance of Dr. Bruno Romeira. The successful candidate will be integrated in The Ultrafast Bio- and Nanophotonics Group.

Selection Committee

The selection of candidates will be carried out by a Selection Committee consisting of the following persons:
