As German Research Center for Environmental Health, Helmholtz Zentrum München pursues the goal of developing personalized medical approaches for the prevention and therapy of major common diseases such as diabetes mellitus, allergies and lung diseases. To achieve this, it investigates the interaction of genetics, environmental factors and lifestyle.
The Institute of Biological and Medical Imaging (IBMI) at the Helmholtz Zentrum München (HMGU) is developing next-generation imaging and sensing methods to measure previously inaccessible properties of living systems, hence, catalyzing breakthroughs in biology and medicine with a strong focus on optoacoustic imaging. The Institute of Computational Biology (ICB) at HMGU develops models and methods for data analysis in systems biology and systems medicine, integrating biomedical information on multiple scales from single cell time series to cohort omics data. Optoacoustic imaging allows for novel insights into biological mechanisms and clinically relevant patient features. Analytics of optoacoustic imaging data is challenged by the large amount of volumetric data, spectral multiplexing and time evolution of signals.
IBMI and ICB are now seeking to jointly install a new Young Investigator Group geared toward machine learning approaches for optoacoustic imaging data and would like to recruit an
The group will build state-of-the-art deep learning tools to analyze the huge image data that emerges from optoacoustics readouts in experimental and clinical settings. The group will be immersed in a multi-disciplinary research environment and offers an ideal opportunity to actively shape the innovative and rapidly developing research field of Artificial Intelligence in Munich. Besides the group leader position offered at a tenure-track level, the group will receive personnel and annual funding to establish itself as a leading focal point in the field.
The new Young Investigator Group leader must hold a PhD, international academic experience, should be highly motivated and innovative, and show a stellar track record in the field of machine learning, artificial intelligence, data science and/or data analytics. The group would focus on establishing advanced methods of optoacoustic computation, collecting and analyzing diverse data streams, including sensor/imaging data, clinical tests and –omics information, and driving research in AI analytics for optoacoustic sensing and imaging in preventive and distributed future medicine.
Candidates should be interested in working in an interdisciplinary team of data scientists, bioengineers, imaging scientists, medical doctors, molecular and stem-cell biologists, biochemists, and neuroscientists at the interface of different research institutes and interface with other research groups at IBMI and ICB and the Helmholtz Zentrum München. Experience with group supervision and management, including successful raising of extramural research funding and supervising other scientists and PhD students, as well as business, entrepreneurial start-up and industry experience will be considered an asset.

Remuneration and benefits are in accordance with the collective wage agreement for the public service (TV EntgO Bund).
