At TU Dresden, Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Department of Hydro Sciences, the Institute of Water Chemistry invites applications for the position of a
Research Associate / PhD Student
(Subject to personal qualification employees are remunerated according to salary group E 13 TV-L)
The position is available starting 1st June 2019, entails 50% of the fulltime weekly hours and is fixed-term until 31.05.2022. The period of employment is governed by the Fixed Term Research Contracts Act (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz – WissZeitVG). The position aims at obtaining further academic qualification (e.g. PhD).
Short project description: The amount of chemicals released into the environment grows at staggering pace impacting water quality, biodiversity and stability of ecosystems to an unforeseen extent. Yet availability of data needed for environmental hazard assessment is remarkably low. The project Applying chemical activity concept in chemical hazard assessment aims to re-design current testing strategies to increase throughput and decrease susceptibility to experimental artefacts by maintaining constant stable exposure and using exclusively taxonomically lower organisms (water fleas). Simultaneously the information output is enhanced by employing chemical activity concept to provide not only indicators of toxicity/bioaccumulation but also information on modes of action, transformation products and (a)biotic partitioning.
Tasks: Using passive dosing to establish and maintain stable exposure in test; performing chronic Daphnia magna tes; extracting hydrophobic pollutants from water/animal tissue; analysis of data and interpretation of results, supervision of M.Sc. and BA students; presentation of results at international conferences, preparation of publications in international high-ranked journals.
Requirements: university degree (M.Sc.) in chemistry, environmental science or related disciplines; Excellent track record; Laboratory experience (knowledge of LC/MS or GC/MS); High motivation and interest in scientific work; Excellent command of English (German would be an advantage).
We offer the possibility to conduct top level interdisciplinary research, excellent laboratory facilities, to international cooperation networks, career support and personal development options.
Applications from women are particularly welcome. The same applies to people with disabilities.
Please send the standard application documents at the latest until 01.04.2019 (stamped arrival date of the university central mail service applies) to: TU Dresden, Fakultät Umweltwissenschaften, Fachrichtung Hydrowissenschaften, Institut für Wasserchemie, Herrn Prof. Dr. Stefan Stolte, Helmholtzstr. 10, 01069 Dresden. Please submit copies only, as your application will not be returned to you. Expenses incurred in attending interviews cannot be reimbursed.
